| Abstract: | Papers consist of
legal documents and other records relating to residents of Hopkins County. The
majority of the records are land grants from the state of Texas but other types
of records include deeds, transfers of power of attorney, oaths, bonds, and tax
receipts. There is also a partial plat survey for the town of Tarrant, former
county seat of Hopkins County. These papers were collected by Wilbur Thomas
Myers of Hopkins County, Texas, and cover the years 1842-1897. Most of the
records are concerned with the granting, transfer, or sale of land in Hopkins
County. The earliest record is an oath for a land grant dating from 1842 during
the Republic of Texas. |

Most of the land grants are on parchment or vellum and bear signatures
of Texas governors. Unfortunately, the handwriting has faded on some of the
records, especially the land grants, and portions are illegible.
