F. E. (Frederick Ernst) Ruffini
F. E. (Frederick Ernst) Ruffini, an architect based in Austin,
Texas, was born in 1851 and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. His parents, Ernst
Frederick Ruffini and Adelheit (Adelaide) Riehme, immigrated from Kamenz,
Germany to Chicago in 1848 and then settled in Cleveland. Ruffini was
apprenticed to an architect in Cleveland and worked in Indianapolis, New York,
Boston, and Chicago before moving to Austin, Texas in 1877. He entered into a
partnership with Jasper N. Preston which lasted two years; he then worked on
his own. Ruffini designed courthouses and jails, commercial and public
buildings, and residences which were built throughout Texas. Extant examples of
Ruffini's designs throughout Texas include the Old Blanco County Courthouse in
Blanco, the Collin County Jail in McKinney, and the Millett Opera House (now
the Austin Club) in Austin. His best known works in Austin (no longer standing)
included the Hancock Building and the Old Main Building at the University of
Texas. The west wing was the only portion of the Main Building that was
completed before Ruffini died in Austin in November 1885. He was married to
Elise (Lizzie) Weitz who died a month before he did. They were survived by
three children.
Although the Ruffini brothers are sometimes identified as Italians,
culturally they were Germans. Italian ancestors had emigrated to Kamenz, in
what is now Germany, about five hundred years before the brothers were
born.
Oscar Ruffini
Oscar Ruffini, an architect based in San Angelo, Texas, was born on
August 10, 1858 in Cleveland, Ohio. Like his brother F. E., Oscar Ruffini was
apprenticed to an architect in Cleveland as a teen, and from 1875 to 1877 he
apparently worked for architect George W. Rapp in Cincinnati. He spent time in
Austin, Texas working for his brother as a draftsman in the late 1870s and may
have spent some time between 1878 and 1880 in France. He developed a
partnership in Evansville, Indiana with Levi S. Clark, a carpenter, and worked
for Francis D. Lee in St. Louis, learning about contemporary engineering
techniques. He worked for his brother again in 1883, taking a break to work in
Detroit for six months as a draftsman for Elijah E. Myers, designer of the
Texas State Capitol. Ruffini returned to Austin and his brother's office,
working as a draftsman and supervisor on projects including the main building
of the University of Texas. By 1884 he had moved to San Angelo to oversee
construction of the Tom Green County courthouse. He designed a variety of
buildings in San Angelo and West Texas including courthouses, commercial and
public buildings, residences, and churches. Ruffini helped organize the San
Angelo Turnverein and the local Sons of Hermann lodge. He never married.
Ruffini died in San Angelo on January 18, 1957.
Return to the Table of Contents
This collection consists of architectural drawings, specifications,
correspondence, photographs, printed material, legal documents, financial
records, an ink stamp, and other materials dating circa 1877-1937, and undated
(bulk 1883-1912, undated), belonging to F. E. (Frederick Ernst) and Oscar
Ruffini, brothers who were architects based in Austin and San Angelo, Texas.
The bulk of the specifications and correspondence was written or received by F.
E. Ruffini between 1883 and 1885. Most of the drawings are by Oscar Ruffini,
with the bulk dating between 1884 and 1912. Projects for which specifications
and/or drawings or other materials exist are county courthouses and jails,
residences, schools, commercial and public buildings, and churches in Central
and West Texas, including Austin, Ballinger, Blanco, Burnet, Coleman,
Georgetown, Goldthwaite, New Braunfels, Ozona, San Angelo, Sonora, Sterling
City, and Taylor. Some drawings and one specification by other architects from
the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries are included in this
collection.
According to Susan Dickey's dissertation on the Ruffini brothers, most
of F. E. Ruffini's pre-1883 business records were apparently destroyed when the
Hancock Building (where his office was located) burned in 1883.

Specifications and related project records,
1879,
1882-1885, 1893, 1902, undated (bulk
1883-1885, undated), 1.55 cubic ft. |
|
Materials are mainly specifications, some of which were copied
into a letterpress copybook that also contains contracts, reports, bills,
statements, a patent, and letters, of F. E. and Oscar Ruffini, brothers who
were architects in Austin and San Angelo, Texas. These are records of projects
dating from 1879, 1882 to 1885, 1893, 1902, and undated (bulk 1883-1885,
undated). An undated specification for a school building in Sonora, Texas by
architect James Wahrenberger and a patent for locomotive headlights by John
McCormick are also included. Specifications and related records are present for
buildings at the University of Texas (Main Building, Laboratory, Latrine), the
state insane asylum, county courthouses and jails, residences, store buildings,
bank buildings, and school houses. Specifications are detailed and exact
statements prescribing materials, dimensions, and workmanship for building
structures. The letterpress copybook was kept by F. E. Ruffini from 1883 to
1884 and contains specifications and related records for projects numbered 209
through 269 (not inclusive), with some unnumbered projects. Some of the loose
specifications duplicate those in the letterpress copybook; loose
specifications cover projects numbered 134 through 307 (not inclusive). Most of
F. E. Ruffini's projects were numbered. Oscar Ruffini's specifications date
from 1893 and 1902 with most undated; only the earliest project is numbered.
Locations of buildings referred to in these specifications include Austin,
Baird, Blanco, Burnet, Georgetown, Gonzales, Menardville, New Braunfels, Paint
Rock, Quitman, Richmond, Rockdale, Runnels, San Angelo, Sonora, and Taylor,
Texas. Researchers should check the other series in this collection for
additional materials relating to a building. Other specifications by F. E. and
Oscar Ruffini are available at the Alexander Architectural Archive at the
University of Texas at Austin and at the Fort Concho National Historic Landmark
in San Angelo. |
|
Arrangement |
|
Materials are grouped by architect: for F. E. Ruffini materials
are then divided between letterpress copybook and loose specifications; for
each architect, materials are then arranged numerically by page number or
project number, somewhat chronologically. Specifications with no project number
or date are arranged by location, then building type. |

Architectural drawings,
[ca.
1878]-1912, 1924, 1932, undated (bulk [ca.
1880]-1912, undated), 626 drawings |
|
The series consists of architectural drawings, including
renderings (some watercolors), floor plans, elevations, sections, details, and
rough sketches circa 1878-1912, 1924, 1932 and undated (bulk circa 1880-1912,
undated) created by F. E. and Oscar Ruffini, brothers who were architects in
Austin and San Angelo, Texas. A few drawings by other architects ( J. J. Kane
of Fort Worth, Texas; Stewart Moore and Barnes & Crosby of Dallas, Texas;
B. F. Trester, Jr.and James Wahrenberger of San Antonio, Texas; Mesker and Bro.
Front Builders of St. Louis, Missouri; and B. Mang[elsen?] of Germany) are also
included. In addition, there are drawings for which the architect is unknown;
the Ruffini brothers are likely the creators for many of these drawings, but no
identifying information has been located. F. E.'s drawings consist of plans for
courthouses, school buildings, jails, piping for the Temporary State Capitol,
insane asylum building additions, and commercial buildings. These designs were
built in Austin, Rockdale, Burnet, Blanco, San Marcos, and Franklin. Most of F.
E.'s drawings are undated, but projects with known dates were designed or built
between 1878 and 1885. Other architectural drawings by F. E. Ruffini are
available at the Alexander Architectural Archive at the University of Texas at
Austin. Oscar's drawings are of commercial buildings, courthouses, jails,
churches, residences, banks, schools, hotels, cultural buildings, and a bridge.
The designs represented here were built in San Angelo, Ballinger, Coleman,
Goldthwaite, Menard County, Ozona, Sonora, and Sterling City. Many of his
drawings are undated, but known dates range from before 1883 to 1924. Other
architectural drawings by Oscar Ruffini are available at the Fort Concho
National Historic Landmark in San Angelo, Texas. Researchers should check the
other series in this collection for related materials. |
|
From the extant drawings and photographs, it appears F. E. Ruffini
used a few basic courthouse plans, and then made each building distinctive by
details such as stonework, window treatment, and roof line. The Gregg and Rusk
county courthouses differ only in details. The Robertson, Navarro, Williamson,
and Hays county courthouses are based on one plan, though the Navarro County
Courthouse appears more elaborate and was designed with a central clock tower
instead of one over the front entrance. The Blanco, Callahan, and Concho county
courthouses designed by F. E. Ruffini are similar; Oscar Ruffini used those
plans in designing the Mills and Sutton county courthouses. Oscar used his
brother's designs as the basis for proposed courthouse plans that were not
built. |

F. E. Ruffini's drawings, [ca.
1878]-1885, undated, 105 drawings |
|
|
|
Architectural drawings by F. E. Ruffini, circa 1878-1885, and
undated, consist of plans for courthouses, a city hall, school buildings,
jails, piping for the Temporary State Capitol, insane asylum building
additions, and commercial buildings. These designs were built in Austin;
Blanco; Burnet; Franklin; Longview[?]; Rockdale; San Marcos; Paint Rock, Baird
and/or Richmond; McKinney, New Braunfels, and/or Franklin; and unknown. One set
of drawings was probably entered in the competition for the Bell County
Courthouse. Most of F. E.'s drawings are undated, but projects with known dates
were designed or built between 1878 and 1885. Other architectural drawings by
F. E. Ruffini are available at the Alexander Architectural Archive at the
University of Texas at Austin. |
|
|
|
After F. E. Ruffini's death, Oscar took his brother's drawings
and papers to San Angelo. A number of F.E.'s drawings were submitted by Oscar
for new projects, annotated, revised, or the reverse side was used for new
designs. Drawings with F.E.'s name still visible despite being washed off or
erased and replaced with Oscar's name are included in this subseries. |

Oscar Ruffini's drawings, [not after 1883], 1884-1912, 1924, undated (bulk 1884-1912, undated), 493 drawings |
|
|
|
Oscar Ruffini's architectural drawings include renderings (some
watercolors), floor plans, elevations, sections, details, and rough sketches
dating before 1883, 1884-1912, 1924, and undated (bulk 1884-1912, undated),
created while working as an architect in San Angelo, Texas. One drawing dates
from his partnership with Levi Clark in Evansville, Indiana. Oscar's drawings
are of commercial buildings, courthouses, jails, churches, residences, banks,
schools, hotels, cultural buildings, and a bridge. The designs represented here
were built in Ballinger, Coleman, Goldthwaite, Menard County, Ozona, San
Angelo, Sonora, Sterling City, and Tom Green County, Texas and [Evansville,
Indiana?]. Most of the drawings are undated, but known dates range from before
1883 to 1924. Other architectural drawings by Oscar Ruffini are available at
the Fort Concho National Historic Landmark in San Angelo, Texas. Researchers
should check the other series in this collection for related materials. |

Correspondence,
1883-1885,
[188-?], 1899, 0.1 cubic ft. |
|
These papers are correspondence, dating 1883-1885, [188-?], and
1899, of F. E. and Oscar Ruffini, brothers who were architects in Austin and
San Angelo, Texas. Most of the correspondence was received by F. E. Ruffini
between 1883 and 1885 concerning architectural projects in Austin and Central
Texas. A number of letters dating 1883 are from Ernst Scherff regarding his
store building in New Braunfels. Other letters provide details of projects and
potential projects, including a rejection letter for Ruffini's plans for the
Colorado State Capitol, discussions about the Texas State Capitol, and
competitions for the Bell, Runnels, and other county courthouses. A number of
letters are written in German. Three items comprise Oscar Ruffini's
correspondence: an 1899 letter regarding the lease of office space for a post
office in San Angelo, and two 1883 letters concerning counter designs from
Seidel & Schoenle, manufacturers in St. Louis, Missouri (see related
drawings in the Architectural drawings series).
See the letterpress copybook in the Specifications and
related project records series for a small amount of outgoing
correspondence by F. E. Ruffini. See the Alexander Architectural Archive at the
University of Texas at Austin for a letterbook, containing correspondence of F.
E. and Oscar Ruffini dating 1883-1889. |
