Biographical Sketch

Colonel William Lindsey was born in Georgia on May 17, 1801. He became
a farmer and gold prospector. In 1837, while prospecting in Texas, he met
Robert Trimble, and they contracted out to survey Galveston Island. Upon
completion of this in 1838, they went to San Antonio, where Robert Trimble was
appointed County Surveyor of Bexar County and William Lindsey was made Deputy
County Surveyor. Lindsey was later appointed County Surveyor, serving in this
capacity from 1839 to 1841. In 1839 Lindsey brought his family to settle in San
Antonio. From approximately 1843 to 1847 he served as District Surveyor in
Fayette County. In 1848 he came to San Marcos. He helped to lay out this town
and opened a land title and real estate company with his cousin, J.E. McCord.
He worked in this business until his death, on November 16, 1852. His son,
Andrew F. Lindsey and a daughter, Queene Lindsey, continued to work with the
business. Throughout William Lindsey's stay in Texas he succeeded in purchasing
large tracts of land. Many of these were sold after his death.

William Lindsey married Mary Chandler and they had four children who
grew past infancy. Louisiana Lindsey married J. N. Blair. After his death she
married Herbert W. Harvey. William F. Lindsey served in the Confederate Army,
worked some with the family business, and became a County Sheriff in 1857. He
died in the 1870s. Andrew M. Lindsey worked with the family business and served
as County Tax Assessor and Collector in 1851, 1852, and 1854. He served in the
Confederate Army, dying at the close of the Civil War. Mary E. Lindsey died at
the age of five. Queene E. Lindsey worked with the family business, and along
with her sister, Mrs. Harvey, and their cousin, J.E. McCord, was involved in
numerous sales of land from William Lindsey's estate.

These papers are: correspondence, both business and personal;
appointments; certificates; deeds of land sales; survey field notes; original
land grants; statements of land sales; judgements and lawsuits; bills of sale;
probate materials; record books; business diaries; receipts and notes of bills
due; notes of expenditures; a muster roll; biographical material; maps of lands
surveyed; funerary materials; and clippings.

The Lindsey Family Papers cover the years 1834 to 1922. The bulk of
the material deals with the period when Lindsey was County Surveyor of Bexar
County, Texas, 1838-1841, and also with the period 1850-1889. These dates cover
a period in which there were many land transactions and correspondence was
heavy between family members. The period containing the least amount of
material is 1890-1922.

There is a series of letters between J. E. McCord and Queene Lindsey,
1876-1881, which discusses the sale of lands from William Lindsey's estate.
Other important items included in this collection consist of several original
land grants assigned by various presidents and early governors of Texas, and
copies of several deeds of land sales. Most of these deeds document land sales
within the town of San Marcos, Texas.
