The collection consists of research notes, copies of genealogically-related materials, and other information collected by Mrs. Balfour Clark. Material dates from 1847 to 1963 with
the bulk of the papers dating from 1944 to 1963. Some original records appear in the files, although most of the information is either transcriptions of documents or data prepared by Mrs. Clark, such as pedigree charts. Her materials have been gathered from family members, historical or genealogical publications, records of various archival institutions, or from correspondence generated by inquiries in genealogical publications. Usually she notes the source of all information transcribed or photocopied for her files.
Each of the files contains a variety of information in a number of different formats. While the contents of one file will not be the same as those of another file, most will have some or all of the following: pedigree charts,
information from family members,
correspondence with archival institutions,
correspondence from genealogy magazine inquiries,
census information,
copies of legal documents, family letters and diaries, etc., and duplicate copies of applications to organizations such as the Daughters of the American Revolution.
The grouping of different family names into a single folder remains in Mrs. Clark's original order. Researchers using the finding aid electronically may search for names of interest. For researchers using a print copy, an alphabetical list of family names is provided.
The materials are transcribed in both manuscript and typescript format. The handwritten notes are both in pencil and in ink. The legibility of the manuscript notes varies considerably.
