Virginia Whitten

Virginia Whitten was a
friend of Governor Ann Richards and served as archivist for her inauguration in
1991. Records include correspondence; memoranda; press releases; news
clippings; newsletters; photographic material including prints, slides, contact
sheets, and negatives; samples of invitations; and other artifacts and
memorabilia. Records date from 1976 to 1992 and relate primarily to the
celebrations surrounding the 1991 inauguration of Ann Richards as governor and
Bob Bullock as lieutenant governor of Texas. Earlier records document Ann
Richards' political offices as county commissioner for Travis county and as
state treasurer. A few records date from the early years of her tenure as
governor of Texas. Correspondence reflects the close relationship that existed
between Governor Ann Richards and Virginia Whitten.

Restrictions on Access
Materials do not circulate, but may be used in the State Archives
search room. Materials will be retrieved from and returned to storage areas by
staff members.
Restrictions on Use
Under the Copyright Law of 1996 as amended in 1998, unpublished
manuscripts are protected at a minimum through December 31, 2002 or 70 years
after the author's death. Researchers are responsible for complying with U.S.
Copyright Law (Title 17 U.S.C.).
Technical Requirements
Researchers are required to wear gloves provided by the Archives when
reviewing photographic materials.
Biographical Sketch
Virginia Whitten, a retired librarian, was the official archivist for
Governor Ann Richards' inauguration and was the first archivist ever to be
appointed by the Texas Inaugural Committee, a committee which was created by
state statute in the early 1970s to plan and fund inaugural events. Whitten
collected and categorized records, artifacts, and memorabilia associated with
the Richards-Bullock inauguration and as a member of the 1991 Texas Inaugural
Committee transferred the records to the Texas State Library and Archives
Commission (TSLAC) in August of 1991. After Virginia's death in May of 1997,
her daughter, Lynn Whitten, donated this material to the State Archives.
