<p>Samuel Ingram and his wife, Jane, settled in Bastrop County in 1858.
They moved there from Webberville, in Travis County, where Samuel had farmed
since the mid-1850s. Prior to 1855, little is known about the couple, except
that they married in Pike County, Illinois in 1852. Both of them had family in
Illinois, and Jane Ingram had lived there all her life. Both Samuel and Jane
had children from previous marriages; Samuel had three sons and a daughter and
Jane had four sons and a daughter. Correspondence between these family members
make up a major part of this collection.</p>
<p>Jane Ingram was born in 1810. She was 42 years old when she married
Samuel, and a year later she had their first child, Mitchell Ingram. In 1858
she had a second son, Henry C. Ingram.</p>
<p>Mitchell Ingram figures prominently in these papers. His files contain
the bulk of the material, and with their addition, the collection was renamed
the Ingram Family papers. He lived in Garfield, Texas for most of his life. His
principal interests, the Farmers State Alliance and the Garfield School System
are reflected in the material in the collection. The files shed little light on
the details of his life, but he is known to have been a farmer by profession,
and he trained as a schoolteacher. He died in 1943.</p>

<p>Sampson Purcell was born October 29, 1836, in Illinois. He was
the son of Daniel and Jane Mitchell Purcell. During the Civil War he served as
a First Lieutenant of Company H, 73rd Illinois Infantry of the Union Army.
Three of his brothers, John, Charles, and George, served as Confederate
soldiers. The letters written by Sampson Purcell in this collection are
addressed to his mother, Jane Ingram, and his stepfather, Samuel Ingram. They
span a period of four years, from 1866 to 1870. One of the letters is a
negative photostat. In the letters Purcell tells his parents of his marriage
and the birth of his only child, Eva, of his many jobs, and of the trials and
tribulations he encounters trying to farm. He also quotes crop yield prices and
describes the weather. After a bout with pneumonia in 1870 Purcell moved to
Texas, hoping the warm weather would improve his health. His wife and daughter
stayed behind in Illinois. He died just a few months after he arrived in
Bastrop County, however, and he was the first Ingram to be buried in the family
					 plot in Garfield, Texas.</p>
<p>Sampson's wife Cynthia A. Purcell begins her correspondence
with Jane Ingram a few weeks before Sampson's death, when she wrote to inquire
after his health. After her husband died, she wrote several times about funeral
arrangements. Her letters span a year, from 1871 to 1872.</p>

<p>John Purcell was born in Illinois (c. 1832-1840), the son of
Daniel and Jane Mitchell Purcell. During the Civil War he fought for the
Confederacy and after the war (c. 1866) he went into the saddle business in
Bastrop County. He married Vera Purcell between 1867 and 1872. Their letters
date from 1866 to 1878, and she is the author of two of the letters found in
this file. After 1872, however, Vera's name is no longer mentioned in any of
the correspondence. Around 1870 John Purcell became a Texas Ranger, serving in
Fort Griffin in Shackelford County under a Major Jones. John was the most
prolific writer in the Ingram family, and his letters to his parents, and later
to his brother, Mitchell, relate some of the hardships a Texas lawman had to
face in the post-Civil War era. On one of the letters written by Vera Purcell,
John wrote a note to his brother William Houston Ingram, who was evidently
living with his parents at the time. John also wrote several poems, which can
be found in the <emph render="italic">Poetry</emph> file in
<emph render="italic">Ingram family papers, general</emph>. He died in 1881 in
					 McDade, where he was buried.</p>

               <head>Biographical Sketch</head>
<p>Mitchell Ingram, the first son of Samuel and Jane Ingram, was born
November 21, 1853. He spent most of his life in Bastrop County, where his
family moved in 1858. In 1876 he attended Parson's Seminary in Kentucky, but
little else is known of any other formal schooling he may have received. He was
qualified to teach, but farming was his chosen profession. Mitchell married
Martha Ingram sometime in the 1880s, and she is mentioned in several of the
letters in these files. But there are no specific facts recorded in this
collection about Martha Ingram, although we know she and Mitchell did have
				children.</p>
<p>Mitchell Ingram's two principal interests, the Farmers' Alliance
and the Garfield School System, are reflected in the material in these files.
He served as president of his local chapter of Farmers' Alliance (IUK Alliance
No. 2533) and there is correspondence and printed material about the Alliance
among his papers. He also served as trustee to the Garfield School Board and
was instrumental in the building of the Haynie Chapel School in Garfield.
Mitchell Ingram was the uncle of the donor of this collection, Mrs. George D.
Hetzel. Her father, Henry Ingram, was Mitchell's younger brother. Mitchell
wrote frequently to many of his stepbrothers and stepsisters. There are letters
in this collection from John and George Purcell and Susan Purcell Freeman and
				from George W. Ingram.</p>
<p>Mitchell Ingram died in Bastrop County in 1943, and he is buried
in the Haynie Chapel Cemetery in Garfield.</p>

<p>Papers consist of correspondence, printed material, financial
documents, legal documents, and clippings, dating from 1876 to 1921. Personal
correspondence makes up the bulk of Mitchell Ingram's papers. Mitchell wrote
frequently to many of his stepbrothers and stepsisters. There are letters among
his papers from John and George Purcell, Susan Purcell Freeman, and George W.
Ingram. Ingram's interest in the Farmers' Alliance and Garfield School System

                  <head>Biographical Sketch</head>
<p>William Houston Ingram was born April 19, 1843, the son of
Samuel and Amelia Tucker Ingram. He kept a diary during 1862 when he was
serving as a Confederate soldier in the Civil War. The narrative begins in camp
near Cairo, Georgia where Ingram was an infantryman. The battery he served in
was under the command of Captain Brink, who was later replaced by a Captain
Harris. Ingram carried mail and messages between battalions, and he also seems
to have done some of the cooking for the camp. By the end of 1862 he had been
promoted to sergeant and was in command of a caisson. Ingram was in one of the
five batteries which made up the battalion led by General Brigg. Some of the
soldiers serving with him that he mentions are: privates Cooper, Wood, Aisley,
Pitts, and Green. He also speaks of Captain Benttheim and Sergeant Crabtree
(who was later reduced to the rank of corporal because of charges of
intoxication), and General Smith, the commander of another battalion. Dr.
Boice, the field doctor, was mentioned often -- Ingram spent a great deal of
				  time in the infirmary.</p>

<p>Papers are a diary (photocopy) from 1862 kept by William Houston
Ingram, a Confederate soldier during the Civil War. In the beginning of the
diary, Ingram takes furlough leave and travels by train to Illinois to visit
family and friends in Chicago. The diary also traces his battery's march
through Georgia to Kentucky. The diary ends with a description of the battles
occurring in the Manchester and Glascow areas in Kentucky. Much of the diary is
illegible, and some of the earlier passages are missing. Fragments of the
original, dated January 13 through January 24, can be found along with the
photocopied pages. There are also photocopies of the lunar charts and a
calendar for 1862 that were located in the front of the original. The original
diary is in the possession of Mrs. George D. Hetzel, the donor of the
				  collection.</p>
