collection consists of maps showing James Harvey Holdeman's oil and gas
interests. Also present are correspondence; legal records; geological surveys
and reports, including field notes; reports of oil and gas companies; and
promotional materials. Dates covered are 1879-1965, with the bulk of the
materials concerned with Holdeman's oil and gas interests during 1920-1950. The
small amount of correspondence deals with Holdeman's offerings of stocks and
securities. The legal documents consist largely of charters and bylaws for some
of Holdeman's corporations. Included in this collection are the papers of a
fellow geologist, F. M. Van Keuren, whose files include correspondence,
geological surveys, and maps.

Biographical Sketch
James Harvey Holdeman was a geologist primarily involved in the
location and production of oil and gas from shallow producing pools, and in the
promotion of investment in these. Focusing on north, central and south-central
Texas, he operated throughout Texas and parts of the midwest and southwest
United States.
He was involved in the formation and management of several petroleum
related companies. In 1917 he served as a trustee for the Moran-Putnam Oil and
Gas Company, based in Moran, Texas. In 1920 he became a trustee of the American
Petroleum Producing Company, headquartered in Waco, Texas. In the late 1920s he
was president of the Geological Petroleum Corporation of Fort Worth. One of his
major associations was with the Atlantic Pacific Corporation of Austin, Texas.
Chartered in 1933, Holdeman served on the board of directors for several years.
In 1949 he formed his own company, Holdeman Petroleum Corporation, of San
Antonio, Texas. He was on its board of directors until the early fifties when
it became inactive. Holdeman Oil and Minerals, also of San Antonio, was
probably his last venture. It was active through the mid-fifties. In addition
to his duties as a corporate officer, Holdeman also promoted the stocks and
securities of Atlantic Pacific Corporation and Holdeman Petroleum Corporation.
James H. Holdeman died in San Antonio, Texas, on September 26, 1963.
Scope and Contents of the Papers
The James Harvey Holdeman Papers cover the years 1879-1965. The bulk
of the materials is concerned with Holdeman's oil and gas interests during
1920-1950. The small amount of correspondence deals with Holdeman's offerings
of stocks and securities. The legal documents consist largely of charters and
by laws for some of Holdeman's corporations. The majority of the collection
consists of maps showing Holdeman's oil and gas interests. Geological surveys
and reports, including field notes; reports of oil and gas companies; and
promotional materials are also present.
Included in this collection are the papers of a fellow geologist, F.
M. Van Keuren, whose files include correspondence, geological surveys, and
maps.
