Biographical Sketch

Oscar Branch Colquitt served as governor of Texas from January 17, 1911 to January 19, 1915. Colquitt was born on December 16, 1861 at Camilla, Georgia. With his family, he moved to Daingerfield, Texas in 1878. Colquitt owned and published several newspapers from 1884 to 1897. He served as state senator from 1895 to 1897 and authored delinquent tax laws. Colquitt acted as a paid lobbyist for several corporations during the sessions of 1899 and 1901. During this time he also practiced law, having been admitted to the bar in 1900. While serving as a railroad commissioner from 1903 to 1911, Colquitt lost a race for governor in 1906. In 1910 and 1912 he was elected and re-elected governor of Texas. Colquitt's administration was known for reform of the prison system, improvement in the physical plants and in the management of eleemosynary institutions, advancements in the education system, and a number of labor reform measures. Following his two terms as governor, Colquitt ran for the U.S. Senate and lost to the incumbent, Charles A. Culberson. Colquitt married Alice Fuller Murrell of Minden, Louisiana on December 9, 1885. They had four sons and one daughter. Colquitt died on March 8, 1940.

Scope and Contents of the Records

Types of records include correspondence, proclamations, reports, letterpress books, printed material, financial records, clippings, and photographs dating from 1905 to 1915 (bulk 1910-1915). Documents are records of Oscar Branch Colquitt's terms as governor of Texas. Correspondence contains applications and requests for appointments to state and local offices, as well as requests for pardons, paroles, requisitions, and extraditions. Subjects of letters include disposition of the Alamo property, relations with Mexico and difficulties on the border, prohibition, and regulation of the cotton market. In addition, the correspondence covers campaigns for governor, public and higher education, the penitentiary and prison reform, changes in banking laws and drug laws, citizens' opinions of Senator Joe Bailey, and preparations for the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco. Reports detail the activities of state agencies during Colquitt's administration. Among the correspondents are Clarence Ousley and Adina de Zavala. Photographs were separated from the incoming correspondence, and include prints, postcards, and other images. Most of the items appear to have been sent to Governor Colquitt through the mail in conjunction with personal greetings, commercial or political promotions, personal requests, or petitions. Pencil notations on the reverse of most items indicate from which folder of correspondence the item was removed.

 

Arrangement of the Records

Incoming correspondence is arranged in alphabetical files, including some subject files, and outgoing correspondence is contained in chronological letterpress books. Photographs were separated to the Prints and Photographs Collection [1930/3-1 thru 82].
