The Texas Volunteer Guard was reorganized by the 28th Legislature,
Regular Session, on April 1, 1903, as the Texas National Guard. All able-bodied
citizens between the ages of 18 and 45 were liable to militia service. The
state militia was divided into two classes: a Reserve Militia composed of all
persons liable to militia duty; and the Texas National Guard composed of
volunteers accepted as such by the commander-in-chief. The Governor of Texas
would serve as commander-in-chief until such time that the National Guard was
called into the service of the United States. The National Guard could be
called
The Governor (commander-in-chief), with advice and consent of the Senate, appoints an Adjutant General with the rank of brigadier-general, plus all other officers of the Texas National Guard. The commander-in-chief also originally appointed a Quartermaster General, who would also be Chief of Ordnance. (The current law calls for the appointment of Assistant Adjutants General.)
On August 5, 1917, the Texas National Guard was drafted into federal service, forming the 36th Division, which was to be mobilized during World War II as well.
These records consist of military orders, correspondence, printed matter, records of personnel, records of property, records of payments for services, and a calendar of riot duties. They comprise records of the Texas National Guard, 1902-1931, 1939, 1941-1945, 1950, and undated (bulk 1903-1911).

These records consist of military orders for the Texas National Guard, dating 1903-1920, 1922-1923, 1942-1943 (bulk 1906-1911). They include printed and typescript general orders and circulars, plus a handful of special orders, issued mainly by the War Department in Washington, D.C., but also by several subsidiary federal headquarters, and by the Adjutant General of the State of Texas. There are separately-bound indexes for War Department general orders and circulars for the years 1908 and 1909.
In addition, there are three volumes containing pasted-down general orders and circulars issued by the War Department between January 1906 and December 1910. Those for 1906 and 1907, plus part of 1908, are not duplicated among the loose orders.
Finally, one enormous, fragile volume contains General Orders from June 24, 1870 through January 8, 1912. The entire range of military organizations for this time period is represented: State Police, State Guard, Reserve Militia, Frontier Forces, Frontier Battalion, Ranger Force, Texas Volunteer Guard, and Texas National Guard. For the time period 1903-1912, military orders concerning the Ranger Force are included, along with those concerning the Texas National Guard.

These records consist of correspondence of the Texas National Guard, dating 1906-1907, 1911-1916, 1920-1928, and undated. One group consists of letters, memos, and telegrams received and sent by the Adjutant General of Texas between 1911 and 1915, mainly regarding the encampments of those years. Specific topics of discussion include attendance, leaves of absence, sick reports, reports of maneuvers, schedules, transportation to and from, supplies, etc.
A specific set of files represents the correspondence of Captain James M. Love, 12th Infantry, Inspector-Instructor, Organized Militia of Texas (1915-1916). These include letters and memos to and from Captain Love, orders concerning him, and other items marked as his copies.
In addition, there is a register of 54 regimental letters received
between January 17, 1906 and July 23, 1907, giving date of receipt of the
letter, file number, name of the writer, the date and subject of the letter,

Finally, of unusual interest is a group of letters consisting of copies of personal correspondence produced by John A. McKee, Chief Clerk, Finance Branch, Property and Disbursing Office at Camp Mabry (1920-1923). In addition to letters to various relatives, this correspondence reflects Mr. McKee's activities as Financier of the Austin Council of the Security Benefit Association, as Secretary of the Mary-Rebekah Lodge (Oddfellows) of Austin, and as a Methodist Sunday School Superintendent.

These records consist of annual returns, field returns, semi-annual returns, and strength returns of the Texas National Guard, dating 1903, 1905-1911, and 1921-1923.
The annual returns (1903, 1906-1910) contain the following information: (for each branch or arm of service) the number of regiments, separate battalions, and companies; actual strength, authorized maximum strength, number of each rank of officers and enlisted men, station, total enlisted, aggregate (actual and authorized); general officers (name, rank, corps/department, duty for which detailed, and organizations attached); the organizations and composition of each; a record of events; a return of publications issued; and the number of males available for military duty, but unorganized.
The field returns (1909, 1911, and 1921) contain the following information: station, commanding officer, troop designation, number of regiments, number of companies, number of each rank of officers and men present and absent (within and without the department), the aggregate; how many equipped for duty, killed, wounded, and missing in action; number of horses (serviceable and unserviceable, and lost in action); the number of pieces of artillery; the officers (number, name, rank, regiment/corps, and remarks); and a record of events.
The semi-annual returns (1905-1908) contain the following

The strength returns are monthly reports for Company B, 144th Infantry (1922), and Headquarters, 56th Machine Gun Squadron (1923). Information includes: predominant race; number of officers and enlisted men present and absent (of the organization, attached, and casuals); strength--present and absent--by rank and grade; and alterations since the last monthly return.

These records consist of morning reports and consolidated morning reports, a duty roster, and guard reports for certain units of the Texas National Guard, dating 1903-1908, 1911, 1921, and 1928.
The morning reports include one for a Camp of Instruction
(August 18-26, 1903), 16 for companies of the 1st and 2nd Provisional Regiments
(September, 1904), one for the 4th Infantry (December 5-13, 1905), and one for
Company F, 4th Infantry (January 14, 1908). In addition, there are several
consolidated morning reports (1911 and 1921): one for the Provisional Infantry
Regiment at Camp Lyon near Fort Worth (April 13-16, 1911); one for
Headquarters, 1st Brigade at Camp Mabry (August 7, 1911) and one for 2nd
Infantry (August 8, 1911); and one for Headquarters, Camp of Instruction
(August 15-24, 1921). Information on these consolidated morning reports
includes date, organization, and number of each rank present and absent, for

The duty roster for the 1st Brigade (August 1911) lists the field officers of the day, by name, rank, and regiment.
The guard reports for the Military Tournament at Camp Lyon (April 11-14, 1911) give a list of the guard by rank (last name, company, and regiment), plus a breakdown of the guard for each of three reliefs, and where posted; no prisoners are listed. The guard reports for the 56th Machine Gun Squadron (July and August, 1928) add to the previous information summaries of prisoners and detailed remarks. There is also a blank booklet for guard reports.
Finally, there is a volume that includes consolidated morning reports for the 1st [Provisional] Regiment of Infantry, 1903-1907.

These records consist of three booklets containing daily sick reports for September, 1904, for Companies D and F, 1st Provisional Infantry, and for Company F, 2nd Provisional Infantry. Information includes: name of patient, rank, date when taken sick, whether in the line of duty, number of times sick during the year, and number of days on sick report during the year; this data is followed by surgeon's remarks (limited to the following: whether in the line of duty, whether in quarters or in hospital, of what duty capable, and date the patient returned to duty).
In addition, for the regimental infirmary at Texas City (August 17-27, 1914), there are daily field reports of sanitary personnel and transportation, daily field reports of patients (which tally the types of cases remaining under treatment), and a report of the sick and wounded (which includes the companies and towns represented, the numbers of admissions and completed cases, and a check list--by name--of all entries on the register cards of patients).

These records consist of various forms that report on drills of individual companies, dating 1903-1911 and 1922-1925.
The Return of company and drill report (1903-1904) provides the following information for a six-month period: a record of strength (by rank) and the names and reasons for losses and gains; the dates of drills, number of officers and men present and absent, the type of drill, and remarks.
The Report of drills and record of attendance (1905-1910) gives the following information for a six-month period: number, date, number of officers and men present and absent (with and without leave), and the character of the drill; the number and average strength present of drills at the home station, practice marches, and target practice; the date, number of days, and average strength at camps of instruction and inspections (state and federal).
The Report of drills, target practice, and field instruction (1903-1911), an annual summary, provides the following: regiment and company/troop/battery; numbers of, and average strength present, for practice marches, camp of instruction, rendezvous target practice, and rendezvous drill; date inspected by state and by federal inspector; and remarks. These reports, usually oversized, are often composed of two sheets.
The Report of a prescribed drill or equivalent military duty (1922-1924), for Company B, 144th Infantry (Mineola), and for Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 56th Machine Gun Squadron (Houston), gives a daily report including the following data: date, duration in hours, company, character of the drill, number of officers and enlisted men present at formation, attending service schools, and absent with and without leave. Reports for the former company are loose, and those for the latter squadron still in booklet form.
The Armory drill attendance records (1922-1924) gives (in booklet form) the following information for each individual in Captain Oscar P. McCary's company: name, rank, date enlistment expires, date of enlistment or rank of officer, date of federal recognition (for officers) or date of qualification (for enlisted men), number of years served, monthly number of days attended armory drill, and remarks. There are also Armory drill payrolls for Company B, 144th Infantry (January 1-September 30, 1925), plus a Field Training Payroll (July 23-August 8, 1925).

The Field Inspection Report (1913) includes a summary of attendance; comments on drill and instruction; comments on discipline; comments on the officers; comments on arms, uniforms, and equipments; comments on sanitation and messing; miscellaneous; and general comments. Separate forms are provided for Organized Militia and for Sanitary Troops. These reports cover entire regiments.
The Inspection Reports of 1915 include a return of strength; a summary of attendance; questions on organization, personnel, armory, the care of property, horses, drill/instruction, camp and field service, and target practice; remarks; and property returns (quartermaster, medical, publications, and ordnance).

These records consist of various reports of small-arms practice by the Texas National Guard, dating 1903, 1905, 1907-1913, and undated.
The majority are Returns of Scores of Rifle and Revolver Practice (1909-1913), which provide the following information for each company: names and ranks; scores and total number of years qualified for each classification (marksman, sharpshooter, and expert), for both rifle and revolver; remarks; the company figure of merit; and a requisition for rifle and revolver practice medals.
The Reports of Small-Arms Firing of the Troops (1903, 1907-1911) are annual consolidated reports, giving the following data: regiment and company; average strength; total number of men qualifying for each classification (i.e., sharpshooter, marksman, etc.); total number firing rifle and carbine; total firing pistol; average score; and remarks. Most are oversized.
There are two sets of narrative reports on firing, accompanied by charts, for the Camp near Leon Springs (August, 1905), and for Camp Mabry (1909).
There is a Score Book for Rifle Shooting, compliments of the United States Cartridge Company (which advertises within the booklet), containing only six filled-in score sheets, dating November 9, 1905. There are also a handful of score cards, two for regiments (3rd Infantry, and Coast Artillery and Signal Corps, dating 1909), and two for individuals in the 56th Machine Gun Squadron.
Finally, there is an undated, oversized Bulletin of a National Rifle Competition, which gives the names, the scores for each type of contest, and the totals for each state team, listed alphabetically by state.

These records consist of the examination papers of 337 candidates for commission and/or promotion as officers in the Texas National Guard, dating 1904-1911, 1918, and undated. These exams, administered by a board of three officers, required short answers on a wide variety of topics, e.g.: guard duty, military law, field fortifications, firing regulations, camping, aid to the injured, riot duty, etc. The files vary in content, typically including questions (occasionally selected from an enclosed printed booklet), answers, enclosures, accompanying orders and letters, and recommendations of the board. Some are typescript, some longhand, some a combination of the two (typed or printed forms with space for the answers in longhand). Many candidates have more than one exam, and there are also some re-exams. Often more than one candidate was examined at a time, with the packets therefore being split.

for commission as assistant surgeons in the Medical Corps of the Texas National
Guard, dating 1904-1906 and 1910-1911. These exams, administered by the

There are, in addition, seventeen volumes containing a variety of quartermaster records. Two of these list the property issued at Camp Mabry during the August 1906 encampment, plus debits and credits for each type of quartermaster item for each officer; both volumes contain indexes. Five volumes, plus a partial volume placed in a folder, contain lists of quartermaster and ordnance stores received by captains of the Texas National Guard (1903-1905, 1905-1906, 1906, 1908, and 1910-1911). One incomplete and undated volume, arranged by company, lists the numbers marked and/or branded on quartermaster supplies and ordnance stores. Two packer's day books (1907-1910) list quartermaster and ordnance stores shipped to each company, giving place, date, which captain and which company, destination, box number, description of the shipment, weight in pounds, and name of the packer. Two shipping books (1905-1907 and 1908-1912) provide date received, date of invoice, number of the bill of lading, number of boxes, the sender, and the articles shipped. Housed in a folder is a bound individual clothing record for Company B, 144th Infantry, dated 1928, that gives each soldier's name, the quantity, type, and size of clothing issued to him, and date of issue. Finally, there are five letterpress books containing outgoing quartermaster correspondence, each containing an index, covering the years 1902-1905; the first one, covering 1902-1905, is mainly from the quartermaster of the Ranger Force.

The semi-annual returns of ordnance of individual companies of the Texas National Guard (1903-1915) are maintained separately. Also arranged separately are the oversized annual returns of ordnance for the state of Texas (1903-1907).
There is a volume that contains an assortment of ordnance records roughly between 1901 and 1911, such as correspondence concerning ordnance (1901-1905) and the serial numbers of rifles (1908, 1910-1911). In addition, two volumes are letterpress books containing combination blanks for the issue of ordnance property, for invoice or receipt (1905-1909), the first one containing an index.

These records consist of documents relating to services rendered on account of the Texas National Guard, 1903-1928, and undated (bulk 1903-1911). These are mostly vouchers plus supporting documents (e.g., receipts and certifications), but there are also proposals and bids, contracts, leases on armories, cancelled checks, and associated correspondence, especially memoranda. The types of services rendered include the following: transportation; hire of horses; hire of wagons and teams; use of automobiles; drayage; freight; storage; salaries; pay for labor, for clerical services, for other services (these are typically accompanied by receipt/pay rolls); hauling of camp equipage; delivery of wood, hay and oats, ice, etc.; construction work; electrical work; utilities; rations or meals; board and nursing of injured guardsmen; laundry; postage; subscriptions to newspapers; telegrams; telephone calls; travel expenses; delivery lists for message centers; etc.

The second section gives a list of the organizations of the Texas
Volunteer Guard and the Texas National Guard that were called into active
service for the suppression of riots, mobs, or other unlawful acts (October 1,
1903-September 15, 1908 for the National Guard). The list includes the
following information: the date, the name of the company, the city, the
captain, the purpose of the service, and the duration. This ten-page list is
followed by copies of two letters: one from the Chief of the Division of
Militia Affairs of the War Department to the Texas Adjutant General (December
4, 1908) requesting the information; and the reply from the Adjutant General
(December 18, 1908). At the foot of each of the three sections is the notation:
