         <head>Agency History</head>
         <p>Jurisdiction to naturalize persons as citizens of the United States
		  extends to state courts having a seal, a clerk, and jurisdiction in law and/or
		  equity in which the amount of controversy is unlimited (U.S.C.A. 8 Sec. 1421).
		  The Texas Supreme Court meets these naturalization jurisdiction requirements
		  and has been used by foreign nationals seeking United States citizenship.</p>

         <head>Scope and Contents of the Records</head>
         <p>Records consist of a volume used by the clerk of the Texas Supreme
		  Court during the Court's Galveston term to record naturalization declarations
		  of intention by foreign nationals to become a citizen of the United States of
		  America. There are approximately fifty declarations that date from 1855 and
		  1867-1869; the majority are from 1855. In the declaration, the applicant swears
		  his intention to become a United States citizen and renounces all allegiance to
		  foreign rulers, especially the applicant's former sovereign, such as the King
		  of Prussia or Emperor of Austria. These oaths were sworn before a clerk of the
		  Texas Supreme Court and include the signature of the applicant and the clerk.

			 Austin History Center, Austin Public Library on June 3, 1994. The ledger was
			 originally donated to the Austin History Center by Mrs. Stuart E. Buckley who
			 had received it from Max Bickler, former clerk of the Texas Supreme Court.</p>
