Abstract: The Betty I. Hook Rienstra papers document the work of Beaumont, Texas, resident Betty I. Hook Rienstra as a member of the South Park and Beaumont Independent School Districts (ISD) boards and her volunteer work with various organizations or events. The papers consist of correspondence, agendas, minutes, memorandums, reports, scrapbooks, newspaper clippings, photographs, publications, newsletters, pamphlets, and financial records pertaining to organizations or activities in which Rienstra participated. Biographical Sketch

Betty Irene Hook Rienstra was born on August 19, 1923, in Beaumont, Texas, to Harry and Mabel McGrew Hook. She grew up in Newark, Ohio, and graduated from Newark High School in 1941. She received a bachelor of science degree in elementary education from Ohio State University in 1945 and taught school for one year in Newark before marrying Marion J. Rienstra in 1946 and returning to Beaumont, Texas. Betty taught school for three years in Nederland, Texas. The couple had five children: James Marion, Mary Elizabeth, George Robert, David Henry, and Nancy Irene. Betty Rienstra was a member of many civic and volunteer organizations in the Beaumont area, including the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Jefferson County Air Pollution Committee (for which she served as secretary for 18 years), the Beaumont Library Commission, and the Houston Area Library System Advisory Council. She and her husband were active members of Trinity United Methodist Church for many years. A longtime member of several Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs), Rienstra served as president of Caldwood PTA, vice-president of Marshall Junior High PTA and Beaumont City Council PTA, and as City Council PTA delegate. She received a Texas Life PTA membership from George Marshall PTA. She was elected to the South Park independent school district (ISD) Board of Education in 1970 and served until 1983, when the district merged with the Beaumont Independent School District. She served on the Beaumont ISD Board of Education from 1984 to 1985. Rienstra was an honorary member of the Eta Nu chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, a teacher's honor society, and a member of the American Association of University Women for 50 years. In 1978, she received state recognition as Outstanding Woman of the Year, Beaumont branch. The same year she received the Beaumont Enterprise and Journal Eve Club Member Award for Volunteerism. Betty Rienstra died on December 7, 2012, in Beaumont and was buried at Oak Bluff Memorial Park in Port Neches, Texas.

Materials do not circulate, but may be used in the Sam Houston Regional Library and Research Center reading room. Materials will be retrieved from and returned to storage by staff members.

Some material within this collection have Public Information Act restrictions pertaining to the confidentiality of personal information. Instances of restricted material include, but are not limited to, home addresses and phone numbers of school district employees, social security numbers, and personal family information (Texas Government Code, Sections 552.117 and 552.147). An archivist must review these papers before they can be accessed for research. The papers may be requested for research under the provisions of the Public Information Act (Texas Government Code, Chapter 552).

Restrictions on Use

Under the Copyright Law of 1976 as amended in 1998, unpublished manuscripts are protected for the life of the author plus 70 years. The term of copyright for published materials varies. Researchers are responsible for complying with the Copyright Law.

This series consists of agendas, minutes, correspondence, budgets, legal documents, personnel records, manuals, clippings, memorandums, newsletters, and reports pertaining to Rienstra's activities as a member of the South Park ISD and Beaumont ISD boards of education. These materials date from 1969 to 1987.
