This series consists of three volumes of minutes of the Board of Trustees for the Texas State Asylum for the Blind/Blind Institute/Texas School for the Blind. These minutes, dating 1856-1919, apparently complete for the first 64 years of the School's existence, are handwritten for the 19th century, and typewritten and pasted into the ledger for the early 20th century. In addition to minutes, they contain regulations, duties, and inventories of property.

This series consists of the printed annual and biennial reports to the Governor of Texas made by the Trustees and Superintendent of the Texas Institution for the Blind, 1886-1899 and 1904 (an incomplete run); by the School for the Blind, 1911-1918; by the Texas Education Agency, Texas School for the Blind, 1955-1964; and by the State Board of Education, Special Schools for the Blind and the Deaf, 1965-1975 (this last group includes reports for the Texas School for the Deaf).

These annual reports give fairly thorough accounts of the activities of the School for the Blind, including lists of faculty and staff, lists of graduates and students (until 1905), reports of the principal concerning educational activity, reports of the oculist and the physician concerning health matters, a business account of the work of the industrial department, improvements made and needed, monthly statements of disbursements of appropriations, etc.

This series consists of printed catalogues for the Texas School for the Blind, almost complete from the mid-1890s through the mid-1920s. Basic information in the catalogues includes lists of the Board of Trustees, the faculty and staff, and the students (through the catalogue of 1925); the course of study; and rules for admission. Later catalogues added brief historical statements, regulations, suggestions to parents (e.g. on discipline, writing home, sending knickknacks, etc.); general information on promotions, graduation, Sunday activities, summer vacations, the library, the often-repeated point that the word Asylum was a misnomer, etc. The latest catalogues in this collection also included lists of graduates of the School from its beginnings.

This series consists of three volumes and one folder, giving information on students of the Texas School for the Blind in various degrees of detail.

The earliest volume lists Pupils in Attendance, 1872-1893, including name, age, date entered, date left and cause, parent's name and post office address.

The Record of Studies and Record of Classes, 1889-1896, gives the names of students (arranged by class), and charts the subjects they were taking and the time of day of each subject. Arrangement is chronological by academic year.

The Roster of Students, 1905-1906 is a simple list of names.

The Roster of Students, 1917-1927 (including the School for the Deaf) lists name, age, parent/guardian, post office, county, cause of blindness/deafness, and address.

This series consists of one post binder titled Teacher Certificate Register, 1943-1968. It records the following information for each member of the faculty: name, address, date registered, race, age, sex, kind of certificate, date issued, date of expiration, on what work or what college, and remarks.

This series contains both incoming and outgoing correspondence of the Texas School for the Blind for 1890, 1902-1930, 1951, 1984-1989. The loose incoming correspondence, mostly from 1903 to 1930, is rather sparse and includes such things as applications for employment and letters of recommendation; guardianship papers; bids, specifications, bonds, and contracts for construction and maintenance work on the buildings and grounds; letters from parents and from former students; etc. Of special interest is a shoebox full of letters received, and copies of letters sent, by a student, Evelyn Werline, 1927-1929. In addition, there are reminiscences by Mr. Caryl J. Watkins of Sydney, Australia, 1984-1989, relating to his aunt Juliette A. Wright (a former teacher at the Texas School for the Blind) and William E. Allen (later Superintendent of the School).

Much more complete, although limited in time span, are letterpress books, which include two sources: copies of letters sent by the Superintendent, 1902-1905 and 1911-1917; and by the Storekeeper and Accountant, 1911-1917. The letterpress books are indexed.

This series consists of one large framed and several smaller unframed certificates, conferring membership and bestowing honors upon the Texas School for the Blind. In addition there are two diplomas of graduation, one blank and the other one completed and in a folding case. Materials are dated 1898, 1925 and 1980-1988.

This series consists of statements of policies and procedures published by the Texas School for the Blind for 1973-1975, 1980-1988, ranging in size from several pages to lengthy manuals. Of special interest is a massive Operating and Procedures Manual in looseleaf format, containing updates through 1987.

These reports relate to a variety of subjects--educational, vocational, fiscal, and administrative dating 1949, 1968-1976, 1989, undated.

This series contains a variety of publications by the Texas School for the Blind, typescript, printed, and braille. Of particular interest, located at the beginning and the end of the first group of miscellaneous publications are informational/promotional brochures, one dated 1909 and the other current (late 1980s). There are staff newsletters, 1977-1979, 1982-1983 and 1988-1989. And finally, there is a complete set of student yearbooks, the Wildcat, dated 1966 through 1988, including both print, braille, and mixed.

This series contains publications of other Texas state agencies relating to the work of the Texas School for the Blind, 1946-1985; and other publications on education of the blind, published in Texas 1983-1985, and outside the state 1871-1968. Among the latter are various proceedings of conventions of the American Association of Instructors of the Blind, 1871-1886 and also from the 1940s; a report of the General Institution for the Blind in Birmingham, England, 1901-1902; a handbook of blind relief laws, 1929; a directory of periodicals of special interest to the blind, 1938; a U.S. Department of Education publication on statistics of special schools, 1938-1940, etc.

This series contains several types of financial records produced by the Texas School for the Blind dating 1881-1942, 1973-1974. Four of these are account ledgers covering the years 1881-1913, which itemize receipts and expenditures (debit and credit transactions), arranged chronologically, and then by subclass of the appropriation (e.g., salaries of administrators, faculty, and staff; clothing; groceries and provisions; transportation; repairs; miscellaneous). An account ledger dated 1913-1916, which is indexed, is arranged by student, and typically has the entry To Cash under the debits, and By Dep[osit] under the credits. Eleven cash books cover nearly three decades (1914-1916, 1919-1923, 1926-1928, 1930-1942), with some gaps; they itemize cash transactions, both debit and credit, under the following headings: pupils, boys' industrial department, girls' industrial department, junk, miscellaneous, and appropriations. Three of the volumes, covering 1936-1941, contain a daily listing of needed groceries, with prices from two or three sources, and a checkmark to indicate the lowest. There is a volume dating 1902-1905, of Accounts with pupils for cash, uniforms, etc. A volume of clothing accounts, 1907-1910, includes sizes of clothing for each student. A large Record of Supplies Received, 1913-1914, gives date, firms delivering supplies, articles delivered, quantity delivered, price, value, order number, and date approved. An accounts volume dated 1927-1932 apparently covers the entire Board of Control, including other institutions besides the Texas School for the Blind. Two warrants registers, 1932-1936, list date, payee, warrant number, and amount. A cash book, 1937-1940, lists mainly pupils, under debit and credit. And finally, a volume of Student Accounts, 1973-1974, arranged alphabetically by student's name, gives name, address, date, explanation, purpose, amount, sales slip, stub, debits, credits, and balance.

This series consists of the records of the Parents Teachers Association/Organization (PTA or PTO) of the Texas School for the Blind, including minutes of general and executive committee meetings, correspondence, by-laws, budgets, a brochure, etc. Dates covered are 1953-1975, 1978.

This series consists of the records of the Southwestern Association of Schools for the Blind (SWASB), of which the Texas School for the Blind is a member. The records include minutes of meetings (which often included wrestling tournaments), correspondence, track and field rules, etc. Dates covered are 1956-1968.

This series consists of one annual report, one register of students, one published history, and a brief chronology dating 1893, 1899, 1925-1965, 1989.

The annual report is the 1899 Annual Report for the Institute for the Deaf, Dumb and Blind Colored Youths.

The volume, labeled the Register of the Texas Deaf and Blind Institute for Colored Youths, 1925-1965, lists date, name, residence, and remarks (either the name of the parent/guardian, or the date the student graduated, withdrew, etc.). The register is broken down by Department (Blind and Deaf), and therein by sex.

There is a ten-page section titled History of the Texas Institute for Deaf, Dumb and Blind Colored Youths, included in a volume edited by Edward Allen Fay, Histories of American Schools for the Deaf, 1817-1893, Volume II: Public Schools in the United States, published in 1893.

Finally, there is a memo originating from the Texas School for the Deaf, 1989, which provides an incomplete list of dates gleaned from historical documents and articles concerning the Texas School for the Deaf and the Texas Institute for Deaf, Dumb and Blind Colored Youths (1856-1985).
