         <abstract label="Abstract:" encodinganalog="520$a">This record from the
		  Texas Sesquicentennial Committee to Celebrate Texas' Annexation to the United
		  States consists of an oversized, tri-panelled, colored birthday card wishing
		  Texas a happy 150th birthday (1845-1995). Attached to one panel of the card is
		  a large tablet on which citizens wrote individual greetings to the state. This
		  tablet is the fourth such tablet. The first three tablets were detached from
		  the birthday card as they were filled. The Committee sponsored the card as part
		  of the ceremony at the Texas State Capitol on February 19, 1996 to commemorate
		  the date in 1846 when power was officially transferred from the Republic of
		  Texas to the State of Texas. </abstract>

         <head>Agency History</head>
         <p>The Texas Sesquicentennial Committee to Celebrate Texas' Annexation to
		  the United States (referred to hereafter as the Committee) was established by
		  Executive Order of the Governor of the State of Texas (AWR 94-18) in order to
		  celebrate Texas' annexation to the United States on December 29, 1845. State
		  Senator John T. Montford and State Representative Jerry K. Johnson served as
		  co-chairs. Ex-officio members of the Committee consisted of one representative
		  each from the Texas Historical Commission, the Texas State Library and Archives
		  Commission, the Institute of Texan Cultures, the Center for American History,
		  and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.</p>
         <p>The purpose of the Committee was to coordinate and assist in the
		  planning of statewide sesquicentennial celebrations. In order to achieve such
		  purpose, the Committee could appoint advisory members and assign such duties
		  and responsibilities as they deemed appropriate and necessary, and the
		  co-chairs could designate such sub-committees as they deemed appropriate and
		  necessary to assist in achieving the purpose of the Committee. Members of the
		  Committee, including advisory members, served without compensation or
		  reimbursement of actual expenses. </p>

         <head>Scope and Contents of the Records</head>
         <p>The record of the Texas Sesquicentennial Committee to Celebrate Texas'
		  Annexation to the United States consists of an oversized, tri-panelled, colored
		  birthday card wishing Texas a happy 150th birthday (1845-1995). Attached to one
		  panel of the card is a large tablet on which citizens wrote individual
		  greetings to the state. This tablet is the fourth such tablet. The first three
		  tablets were detached from the birthday card as they were filled. This birthday
		  card was produced by American Greeting Cards and H.E.B. (a supermarket chain)
		  to celebrate the 150th birthday of Texas' statehood. In February 1996, the card
		  was transported courtesy of Tex-Pack Inc. to twenty-one Texas towns and cities
		  where it was signed by thousands of Texans. It traveled to Abilene, Amarillo,
		  Austin, Beaumont, Brownsville, Bryan/College Station, Corpus Christi, Dallas,
		  El Paso, Fort Worth, Harlingen, Houston, Laredo, Lubbock, Midland, Odessa, San
		  Angelo, San Antonio, Tyler, Victoria, and Waco. The Committee sponsored the
		  card as part of the ceremony at the Texas State Capitol on February 19, 1996 to
		  commemorate the date in 1846 when power was officially transferred from the
		  Republic of Texas to the State of Texas.</p>
         <p>To prepare this inventory, the described materials were cursorily
		  reviewed to delineate series, to confirm the accuracy of contents lists, to
