Texas Commission on the Arts, Texas Arts Exchange:An Inventory of Records at the Texas State Archives, 1977-1985
Agency HistoryThe Texas Arts Exchange (TAEX) was established by the Texas Commission on the Arts in cooperation with the Mid-America Arts Alliance and the Western States Arts Foundation in September 1981. It was begun as a three-year experiment to bring Texas into the national network of regional arts organizations. The Texas Commission on the Arts uses the Texas Arts Exchange to meet with its peers from other states, to exchange information, and to increase its understanding of other state arts agencies' operations and concerns. Another purpose of the Texas Arts Exchange is to assist arts companies and artists from the states represented by the regional organizations to successfully tour each other's respective state or region. This may include financial assistance for certain touring groups selected by the Texas Arts Exchange to receive support funds. To increase communication and coordination, the Texas Arts Exchange has also presented touring arts workshops and booking conferences, compiled a directory of Texas presenters, and developed a touring art exhibition program. Return to the Table of Contents Scope and Contents of the RecordsThe records from the Texas Arts Exchange (TAEX) include meeting files, commissioners' files, photographs, and research files. Types of records in the meeting files include minutes, correspondence, agenda, hand-written notes, reports, and drafts of letters and minutes. Commissioners' files include correspondence, vita, and travel vouchers from commissioners on the Texas Commission on the Arts. Photographs include prints and negatives of artists and artwork compiled by TAEX for touring brochures. Research files are publicity materials gathered by TAEX and related to the promotion of the arts and art activities in cities across Texas and in other states. Research records include press releases, art school catalogs, exhibition brochures, performance programs, newsletters, and bulletins. Records date from 1977 to 1985. Overall, these records document the promotion and exchange of the arts through the activities of the Texas Arts Exchange. To prepare this inventory, the described materials were cursorily reviewed to delineate series, to confirm the accuracy of contents lists, to provide an estimate of dates covered, and to determine record types.
