The Texas State Board of Barber Examiners was created in 1929 by the Texas Barber Law, House Bill 104, 41st Legislature, 1st Called Session, to protect Texas consumers by regulating the practice of barbering. The board administers the examination and licensing of barbers and barber instructors, requires health certificates for barbers, provides for licensing of barbershops and schools, and requires regular inspection of such establishments for compliance with rules and regulations concerning sanitation established by the Texas Department of Health. The policy making body of the agency is a six-member board, appointed by the governor with concurrence of the senate for overlapping six-year terms.
The records consist of two volumes of original minutes from the Texas State Board of Barber Examiners. The minutes begin with the first meeting of the Board on October 25, 1929 and continue up to August 11, 1963. Minutes document the Board's enforcement of the Texas Barber Law and the administration of the agency.
