|
Abstract: |
These materials
consist primarily of photographs of events, localities, and individuals taken
for publication in Texas Libraries, a quarterly
publication of the Texas State Library and Archives Commission (until 1979, the
Texas State Library and Historical Commission); the Commission's
Biennial Report; and possibly other publications.
Negatives, slides, and textual materials are also present. These materials were
gathered by Millicent Huff, Publications Officer, and cover the years
1909-1979, bulk from ca. 1960 to 1979. Photographs relating to State Library
events were primarily taken by either Millicent Huff or Bill Malone, a
photographer on state contract. Other images were sent to the Library from
other Texas libraries for the most part. Topics and events covered are the
dedication of the State Archives and Library Building in 1962, the work of
Peter Hurd and Peter Rogers (including original correspondence with the artist
and early sketches) on the mural in the lobby of the same building, the
construction of and moving to the Records Center of the State Library,
bookmobile demonstrations, State Library history, American Association for
State and Local History awards, and library meetings. The photos of the
divisions of the Texas State Library and Archives Commission show equipment,
personnel at work, reference areas, other interior building shots, and
documents and artifacts of the Library. Photos of libraries from around the
state are present. |

These are the files of the Publications Office of the Texas State
Library and Archives Commission (from 1909 to 1979, the Texas State Library and
Historical Commission). Materials were gathered by Millicent Huff, Publications
Officer, and cover the years 1909-ca. 1979, generally from 1960 to 1979. This
collection consists primarily of photographs of events, localities, and
individuals taken for publication in Texas
Libraries, a quarterly publication of the Library and Archives
Commission; the Commission's Biennial Report; and
possibly other publications. Negatives, slides, and textual materials are also
present. The photographs are largely black and white and range in size from
3-by-5 snapshots to 8-by-10 glossies. Photographs relating to the State Library
events were generally taken by either Millicent Huff or Bill Malone, a
photographer on state contract. Other images were sent to the library from, for
the most part, other Texas libraries.
Topics and events covered in these records are the dedication of the
State Archives and Library Building in 1962, work by Peter Hurd and Peter
Rogers (including original correspondence with the artist and early sketches)
on the mural in the lobby of the same building, construction of and moving to
the Records Center, the State Library bookmobile demonstrations, State Library
history, American Association of State and Local History (AASLH) awards, and
library meetings, such as the Governors Conferences on Libraries. The photos of
the divisions of the Texas State Library and Archives Commission show
equipment, personnel at work, reference areas, other interior building shots,
and documents and artifacts of the Library. Many of the materials are grouped
by subject. Those items not categorized as such are loosely arranged into
groups--people, events, places. Also present are photos of libraries from
around the state.
To prepare this preliminary inventory, the described materials were
cursorily reviewed to delineate series, to confirm the accuracy of contents
lists, to provide an estimate of dates covered, and to determine record
types.

Mural |
|
The mural is located in the lobby of the Archives and Library
Building. Initial background work on the project was begun by Peter Hurd. Early
on, Hurd's son-in-law, Peter Rogers, took over responsibility for the work,
including creation of the original design and painting of the mural. Files
contain original correspondence with the artist, sketches, and photographs of
the mural--both work in progress views and those of the completed mural.
Additional mural correspondence can be found in the correspondence files of the
Library and Archives Commission. |
