Biographical Sketch

Andrew James (Andy) Kyle IV was born on February 7, 1915 in Concord, New Hampshire. He was married to Mildred Kemper Hicks on December 30, 1943. He served in the Army Air Force during World War II as a crew chief of a C-47 assigned to the 50th Troop Carrier Squadron, 314th Troop Carrier Group. The 314th took part in five different airborne operations in Europe: Sicily, Salerno, D-Day in Normandy, Holland, and the crossing of the Rhine River. As crew chief, Kyle was the non-commissioned officer in charge of the airplane's maintenance ground crew, who remained at the unit's base and handled upkeep and repairs on the aircraft.

Kyle graduated from Ohio State University with a degree in journalism and pursued his passion as an illustrator and cartoonist. After his military service, he settled in Liberty, Texas and worked for the local newspaper, the Liberty Vindicator. Kyle also collected arrowheads as a hobby over the course of many decades and donated a large collection to the Sam Houston Regional Library and Research Center. He died on March 26, 2014 at the Northwest Louisiana War Veterans Home in Bossier City, Louisiana and is buried in Cooke Memorial Cemetery in Liberty, Texas.
