Historical Note

Aalbert Heine was hired as the first Corpus Christi Junior Museum Director in August of 1957. His previous position was as a curator for the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. Heine’s passion was natural history and his vision was of a museum where people could touch things. He accomplished that at the Corpus Christi Junior Museum and children loved to visit. A shrunken head was loaned from the Fort Worth Children's Museum for the grand opening and the head was touched by many, returning to Fort Worth after six months. Heine immigrated to the United States in 1951. Originally he was from Holland, fought and was captured by the Germans in World War II and held prisoner for eighteen months. He served as the Director for the Corpus Christi Museum until 1984. He collected materials on paper making and donated a collection of books, articles, newspaper clippings, and journals to the South Texas Archives in 1991. He died in 2003 at the age of 82.
