		<p>Quincy Adams, at the time of the letters, was twenty-eight years old
		  and an officer in the United States Marine Corp. He had family in
		  <geogname> Baltimore,</geogname> including his mother, father, and a
		  brother 
		<title render="doublequote">Billie</title> and a girlfriend or perhaps
		fiancée in England.</p>

		<head>Scope and Content Note</head> 
		<p>The 
		<title render="doublequote">Quincy Letters</title> contain nine letters
		totaling sixty-five pages from 
		<persname>Quincy Adams</persname> to his 
		<title render="doublequote">darling sweetheart</title> Viviane in
		England. 
		<persname>Quincy</persname> is an officer with the 1st Regiment, 1st
		Brigade, 2nd Battalion, USMC stationed in 
		<geogname>Vera Cruz, Mexico</geogname> during the Mexican 
		<subject>Revolution.</subject> The letters consist primarily of petitions
		for Viviane to come to 
		<geogname>New York</geogname> so that the two can marry, despite apparent
		objections by both their families, and there are also occasional descriptions
		of daily life in the camp (patrol duty, playing baseball against another
		Regiment, going to town) and a handful of descriptions of battle (many of which
		
		<persname>Quincy</persname> seems to have gleaned from newspapers or
		secondhand accounts). Many of the people referred to in the letters are given
		only first names or rank and last names.</p>
