		<head>Biographical Note</head>
<p>Based on excerpts from the biographical folder on
<persname>William M. Taylor</persname>, his parents were slaves owned
		  by a
<persname>Dr. Clement</persname>, a former Tennessee native who moved
to Texas. Taylor’s father’s name was
<persname>Edward Taylor</persname> and his mother’s name was Paralee.
		  <persname>Rev. Taylor</persname> was born
		  <date>January 28, ca.1864.</date> He attended
<subject>Bishop College</subject> and took the county exam and passed
to become a certified teacher in his early teens. He was the youngest person to
pass the Anderson County Board. He taught school in
		  <geogname>Palestine,TX</geogname> and
		  <geogname> Gonzales, TX.</geogname> </p>
		<p>In
<date>1890</date>, he took a business trip traveling throughout the
North visiting Detroit and other cities in Michigan. He also visited Chicago,
St. Louis, Ontario, Canada, Niagara Falls, Syracuse, Rochester, and Albany, New
York, Philadelphia, Jersey City, and Memphis. </p>
		<p>In
		  <date>1891</date>, Taylor attended
		  <subject>Guadalupe College</subject> and graduated in 1894. His
benefactor, mentor, and teacher was a black professor he first met during his
		  studies at
		  <subject>Bishop College,</subject>
<persname>Professor David Abner.</persname> He renewed his acquaintance
		  with
<persname>Professor Abner</persname> when he became president of
<subject>Guadalupe College</subject> and Taylor began his studies there
in the fall of 1891. He graduated in 1894 with the funding and support provided
		  by
<persname>Professor Abner </persname>and other instructors and staff at
		  the College. </p>
<p>He was elected state organizer for the
<subject> General Baptist State Convention.</subject> He served four
years as President of BYUP (
<subject>Baptist Young Peoples Union President</subject>) and handled
		  financial affairs for the
<subject>East Texas Associational District</subject> that represented
		  the financial interest of
		  <subject>Bishop College,</subject>
		  <subject>Hearne Academy,</subject> and
<subject>Guadalupe College.</subject> During this time Taylor decided
to answer his calling to the ministry. He was examined and ordained a minister
		  <date>March 4, 1895.</date> His first church was
<subject>Palestine Baptist Church</subject> then in 1896 he became
		  pastor of
		  <subject>Second Baptist Church</subject> in
<geogname>Port Lavaca, TX.</geogname> He resigned from this church in
the fall of 1896 to become the educational field agent of
		  <subject>Guadalupe College. </subject></p>
<p>Throughout all of these educational and religious endeavors,
<persname>Rev. Taylor </persname>lost his parents, had to care for his
brothers and sisters through illnesses, death, and provide all of their
financial support. After the death of his siblings,
		  <persname>Rev. Taylor </persname>moved to
		  <geogname>Brenham, Texas</geogname> and married
		  <persname>Mayme Alice Sinclair</persname> of
<geogname>Gonzales, Texas.</geogname> The biography included in this
