The genesis of the Las Moras Ranch can be traced to about 1875, when a French immigrant, Ernest Carlin, purchased 30,000 acres of land at the head of the Las Moras Creek in Menard County, Tex., where he established a ranch, sometimes called King Carlin's Ranch. On 21 Dec. 1879 Carlin's property was forclosed upon by the Galveston, Tex. banking firm of Kaufmann and Runge, owned by Henry Runge (1816-1873), head of a prominent German family, several members of which had emmigrated to Texas in the 1840s. After Henry Runge's death, his oldest son, Henry J. Runge (1859-1922) took over running most of his father's businesses. Louis Hermann Runge (1861-1936), youngest brother of Henry J. Runge, and his family took over the Carlin property soon after the bank foreclosure, making Carlin's ill-fated mansion house the headquarters for the newly christened Las Moras Ranch.
Most of the rest of the ranch properties added to the Carlin land to form the Las Moras Ranch by the Runge family was originally owned by the Adelsverein, or German Emigration Company. Upon the Adelsverien bankruptcy in 1847, its lands had also been confiscated by Kaufmann and Runge. The Las Moras Ranch was managed by Louis Hermann Runge (1861-1936), youngest brother of Henry J. Runge, from Sept. 1888 until 27 February 1897, when management of the ranch was assumed by Walter Tips (1841-1911), a German emigrant and Texas businessman who, after the death of Henry Runge, had formed the Las Moras Ranch Company on 21 December 1879, with his wife's aunt, Julia Runge, wife of Henry Runge, and Runge's sons Henry J. Runge, and Louis H. Runge. Tips was in charge of the Las Moras Ranch when liquidation was intitiated, though he died in 1911, and the ranch properties were not completely dispersed until 1913. The Las Moras Ranch Papers (1869-1913 (bulk: 1900-1913)) consist chiefly of correspondence regarding the Runge family of Galveston, Tex. and Menard, Tex., including Henry Runge, his sons Henry J. Runge and Louis Hermann Runge, their cousin Julius F. Runge, as well as family members in Hannover, Ger., including heirs Hans Eyl and his wife Meta Eyl; German emigrant and Texas businessman Walter Tips (1841-1911) who, after the death of Henry Runge, had formed the Las Moras Ranch Company 21 December 1879 with his wife's aunt Julia Runge, wife of Henry Runge, and Runge's sons Henry J. Runge, and Louis H. Runge; German Emigration Company lands, lawyers and law firms in Austin, Tex. and San Antonio, Tex., including C. A. Goeth, the firm of Webb &amp; Goeth, Adolph Goeth, business partner of Walter Tips and brother of C. A. Goeth.

Also present are: legal documents, including deeds, wills, powers of attorney; some ranch operations records, including ranch inventories, accounting ledgers, and handwritten notes, as well as oversize plat maps.

         <p>
            <corpname>Kaufmann and Runge</corpname> was owned by<persname> Henry Runge</persname> (1816-1873), head of a prominent <subject>German</subject> family, several members of which had emmigrated to <geogname>Texas</geogname> in the 1840s. After <persname>Henry Runge</persname>'s death, his oldest son, <persname>Henry J. Other properties, also foreclosed upon by <corpname>Kaufman and Runge</corpname>, which had been the result of the financial failure of the <corpname>German Emigration Company</corpname> in 1847, were incorporated into the original Carlin property to enlarge the <geogname>Las Moras Ranch</geogname>. </p>
         <p>
            <corpname>The Verien zum Schutz deutscher Einwanderer</corpname>, or <corpname>Society for the Protection of German Immigrants</corpname>, later known as the <corpname>German Emigration Company</corpname> was organized 20 April 1842 by a group of <subject>German</subject> noblemen at <geogname>Biebrich</geogname> on the <geogname>Rhine</geogname>, near <geogname>Mainz, Ger.</geogname> This group of noblemen called the <subject>Adelsverein</subject>, <subject>Mainzer Verein</subject>, or simply the <corpname>Society of Noblemen</corpname>, had as their goal the encouragement of mass <subject>German</subject> emigration to the <geogname>United States</geogname>, and in particular, to the vast and relatively cheap lands available in <geogname>Texas</geogname>, originally made available to emigrants by land grants from empresario agents of the <subject>Mexican government</subject> and, later, the <corpname>Republic of Texas</corpname>. <geogname>New Braunfels, Tex.</geogname>, founded in 1845, and <geogname>Fredericksburg, Tex.</geogname>, established in 1846, were two very successful results of the activities of the <corpname>Adelsverein</corpname>'s <geogname>Texas</geogname> settlement endeavors. </p>
         <p>About 1844, the <corpname>Adelsverein</corpname> had purchased the rights to a portion of a nearly three million acre grant first received from the <geogname>Republic of Texas</geogname> on 7 June 1842, then renewed 1 Sept. 1 1843, by <persname>Henry Francis Fisher</persname>, <persname>Burchard Miller</persname> and <persname>Joseph Baker</persname>. The rights to settle the land had been forfeited because of the would-be empresario's inabilty to fulfill their settlement scheme. This <subject>Fisher-Miller Grant</subject>, located about 100 miles west of <geogname>Austin, Tex.</geogname>, was, at first, a very unfavorable location because of its intrusion into the <subject>Comanche</subject> tribe's camping and hunting ground. This particular problem was solved by a treaty between the <subject>Comanche</subject> tribe and the <subject>German</subject> settlers, concluded 9 May 1847 by <persname>Baron Ottfried Hans von Meusebach</persname>, who had been sent to <geogname>Texas</geogname> as the <subject>Adelsverein's Land Commissioner</subject>. Other areas of the lands purchased for <subject>German</subject> settlement by the <subject>Adelsverein</subject>, however, posed more serious problems to successful settlement, and were eventually abandoned to the mountains running through them, or the wastes which had defeated the settlers, many of whom either returned to <geogname>Europe</geogname>, or relocated to <subject>German</subject> towns such as <geogname>Fredericksburg, Tex.</geogname> or<geogname> New Braunfels, Tex.</geogname> Some members of the <persname>Runge</persname> family, for example, eventually returned to <geogname>Hannover, Ger</geogname>.</p>
         <p>A close friend of <persname>Meusebach</persname>, <persname>Henry Runge</persname> (1816-1873), the son of an affluent landowner in <geogname>Germany</geogname>, trained for a commercial career and emigrated to the <geogname>United States</geogname>, arriving in <geogname>New Orlean, La</geogname>. in 1841. The success of the <corpname>German Emigration Company</corpname> in establishing <subject>German</subject> settlers in <geogname>Texas</geogname> drew <persname>Henry Runge</persname> to relocate to<geogname> Indianola, Tex.</geogname> in 1843, where he became an important merchant, then banker and financier. As a result of the<subject> Civil War</subject>, <persname>Henry Runge</persname> had to abandon his business concerns in <persname>Indianola</persname>, which included the<corpname> Indianola Railroad Co.</corpname>, but he relocated to the predominantly <subject>German</subject>
            <geogname>New Braunfels, Tex.</geogname>, and founded a cotton factory. After the close of the <subject>Civil War</subject>, <persname>Henry Runge</persname> reclaimed his businesses in <geogname>Indianola, Tex.</geogname>, and, by 1866, the <persname>Runge</persname> family moved to<geogname> Galveston, Tex.</geogname> In <geogname>Galveston</geogname>, as a partner in<corpname> Kaufmann and Runge</corpname>, with major interest in shipping, merchandising and banking, <persname>Henry Runge</persname> was one of the major creditors in the 1847 bankruptcy of the <corpname>German Emigration Co.</corpname> Properties seized as a result of this bankruptcy were added to the original properties forfeited by <persname>Ernest Carlin</persname>, to form the extensivie <geogname>Las Moras Ranch</geogname>, owned and run by members of the <persname>Runge</persname> family until the sale of the ranch properties was completed in 1913. </p>
         <p>The<geogname>Las Moras Ranch</geogname> was managed by <persname>Louis Hermann Runge</persname> (1861-1936), youngest brother of <persname>Henry J. <p>Also present are: legal documents, including deeds, wills, powers of attorney; some ranch operations records, including ranch inventories, accounting ledgers, and handwritten notes. These papers record the operations and transfers of ownership of over 130,000 acres of property, principally in the <geogname>Texas</geogname> counties of <geogname>Comal</geogname>, <geogname>San Saba</geogname>, <geogname>Tom Green</geogname>, <geogname>Concho</geogname> and <geogname>Menard</geogname>, collectively known as the <geogname>Las Moras Ranch</geogname>. </p>
         <p>Beyond the acquisition, operation, and ultimate liquidation of this ranch property, however, an interesting part of <geogname>Texas</geogname> history, that of the <subject>Adelsverien</subject> or <corpname>German Emigration Company</corpname>, and early <subject>German</subject> immigrant settlement, is illuminated through the documents in the collection.

         <p>The Las Moras Ranch papers (1869-1913) are arranged chronologically into four series reflecting the history of the ranch from its foundation until its sale in 1913: Series 1. Early History (1869-1902), Series 2. Operations (1903-1906), Series 3. Liquidation (1907-1913), and Series 4. Miscellaneous (undated). </p>
         <p>Series 1. Early History, begins with an 1867 legal document showing a transfer of ownership of many thousands of acres of land from <persname>Hermann Arnold Henry</persname> (Heinrich) <persname>Runge</persname> (1821-1861) of <geogname>Funchal</geogname>, <geogname>Madiera, Portugal</geogname> to his brother and business partner, <persname>Henry Runge</persname> (1816-1873). <persname>Henry Runge</persname> paid for the land in <subject>American Gold</subject>. Other documents in the papers include a very large judgment against the <subject>Adelsverien</subject> or <corpname>German Emigration Company</corpname>, a copy of the lengthy handwritten <title render="doublequote" linktype="simple">Last Will of Henry Runge,</title> probated 2 April 1873 and that of his wife, Julia, dated 23 March 1896.</p>
         <p> Subsequent documents in Series 2.-Series 4. of the papers highlight the operation and eventual liquidation in 1913 of the <geogname>Las Moras Ranch</geogname>, including transcontinental communications between <geogname>Germany</geogname> and <geogname>Texas</geogname> among heirs to the <persname>Runge</persname> fortune.
Several of these family letters scattered through the papers may be particularly difficult to translate, since they are written in <subject>Kurrentschrift</subject>, a <subject>Gothic</subject> handwriting style.</p>
         <p>Playing important roles in the later transactions concerning the ranch properties were the sons of <persname>Henry Runge </persname>(1816-1873): <persname>Henry J. Runge</persname> (1859-1922), <persname>Louis Hermann Runge</persname> (1861-1936), and his nephew<persname> Julius F. Runge</persname> (1851-1906). <persname>Henry J. Runge</persname> and <persname>Julius F. Runge</persname> were financial advisors, while <persname>Louis Runge</persname> served as ranch manager and lived on the<geogname> Las Moras Ranch</geogname> property. <persname>Walter E. Tips</persname> (1841-1911), another <subject>German</subject> immigrant, <geogname>Texas</geogname> Senator and successful hardware merchandiser, who married into the <persname>Runge</persname> family, along with <persname>C. A. Goeth</persname> (b. 1869), a <geogname>San Antonio </geogname>attorney, were involved in the ranch operations and legal issues concerning the eventual dispersal of <geogname>Las Moras Ranch</geogname> property. </p>
