		<abstract label="Abstract" encodinganalog="520$a"> Everette Beach Long,
		  one of America's foremost experts on the Civil War, was born on 24 October
		  1919, in Whitehall, Wisconsin to Cecil Everettee and Florence (Beach) Long. He
		  attended Miami University in Oxford, Ohio from 1937 to 1939 and Northwestern
		  University from 1939 to 1941. In 1942, E. B. Long married Barbara Conzelman.
		  Devoting himself to historical research and teaching, and a prolific writer of
		  historical works focusing on the American Civil War, Long was the director of
		  research for Doubleday's multi-volume 
		  <title render="italic" linktype="simple">Centennial History of the
			 Civil War</title>, written by Bruce Catton from 1955 to 1965. He was a member
		  of the advisory council of the National Civil War Centennial Commission. Long
		  was a member of the Chicago Civil War Round Table and served as its president
		  from 1955 to 1956. He was a member of the Friends of the Chicago Public Library
		  and was its president in 1960. Long died on 31 March 1981 in Chicago, Illinois,
		  the day after the publication of his last work, 
		  <title render="italic" linktype="simple">The Saints and the Union: The
			 Utah Territory in the Civil War</title>. The E. B. Long Papers (1949-1981)
		  consist of thirty-four boxes (40 linear ft), including: personal
		  correspondence, manuscripts by Long and others, articles, booklets, essays,
		  clippings, photocopies, research notes, maps, brochures, and photographs. While
		  most of the materials in this collection are dated in the twentieth century,
		  there are several original Civil War documents of the nineteenth century. Of
		  further interest are the drafts of Allan Nevins's 
		  <title render="italic" linktype="simple">Ordeal of the Union</title>,
		  which were edited by E. B. Long, and the nine long index boxes of Long's
		  research notes on the Civil War. The papers have been divided into the
		  following categories: personal correspondence, manuscripts by Long, manuscripts
		  by others, general files covering a wide range of subjects, drafts of Allan
		  Nevins' 
		  <title render="italic" linktype="simple">Ordeal of the Union</title>,
		  research notes on the Civil War, index card files of articles, and
		  miscellaneous volumes of clippings. The correspondence is arranged both
		  chronologically for general correspondence and alphabetically for
		  correspondence with specific individuals, resulting in some overlapping of

		  <persname>Everette Beach Long</persname>, one of America's foremost
		  experts on the 
		  <subject>Civil War</subject>, was born 24 October 1919, in 
		  <geogname>Whitehall, Wisconsin</geogname> to 
		  <persname>Cecil Everettee</persname> and 
		  <persname>Florence (Beach) Long</persname>. He attended 
		  <corpname>Miami University</corpname> in 
		  <geogname>Oxford, Ohio</geogname> from 1937 to 1939 and 
		  <corpname>Northwestern University</corpname> from 1939 to 1941. In
		  1942, 
		  <persname>E. B. Long</persname> married 
		  <persname>Barbara Conzelman</persname>. </p> 
		<p> 
		  <persname>E. B. Long</persname> began his career working for the 
		  <corpname>Chicago Bureau of the Associated Press</corpname> for eight
		  years and as an associate editor of 
		<title render="italic" linktype="simple">American Peoples
		  Encyclopedia</title>. After this time, he decided to devote himself to
		historical research and teaching. <emph render="doublequote">I got interested
		in the Civil War as a hobby,</emph> he explained. <emph
		render="doublequote">Then it became an avocation, then a way of life.</emph> 
		<persname>Long</persname> was the director of research for 
		<corpname>Doubleday</corpname>'s multi-volume 
		<title render="italic" linktype="simple">Centennial History of the Civil
		  War</title>, written by 
		<persname>Bruce Catton</persname> from 1955 to 1965. He was a member of
		the advisory council of the 
		<corpname>National Civil War Centennial Commission</corpname>. 
		<persname>Long</persname> was a member of the 
		<corpname>Chicago Civil War Round Table</corpname> and served as its
		president from 1955 to 1956. He was a member of the 
		<corpname>Friends of the Chicago Public Library</corpname> and was its
		president in 1960. </p>

		  <persname>E. B. Long</persname>'s list of honors and awards includes a 
		  <subject>D. Litt.</subject> from 
		  <corpname>Lincoln College</corpname> in 1961 and the 
		  <persname>Harry S. Truman</persname> award for 
		  <subject>Civil War scholarship</subject> in 1964. He received the 
		  <subject>Award of Merit</subject> from the 
		  <corpname>Illinois Civil War Centennial Commission</corpname> in 1963
		  and 1965, the 
		  <subject>Award of Commendation</subject> from the 
		  <corpname>Oklahoma Civil War Centennial Commission</corpname> in 1965,
		  and the 
		  <subject>Centennial Medallion</subject> from the 
		  <corpname>U. S. Civil War Centennial Commission</corpname> in 1966.

		<p>The writings of 
		  <persname>E. B. Long</persname> include 
		<title render="italic" linktype="simple">As Luck Would Have It</title>
		co-written with 
		<persname>Otto Eisenschiml</persname> and published by 
		<corpname>Bobbs</corpname> in 1948, as well as 
		<title render="italic" linktype="simple">The Civil War, A Picture
		  Chronicle, Vol. 2,</title> co-written with 
		<persname>Ralph Newman</persname> and published by 
		<corpname>Grosset</corpname> in 1956. He was the editor, with 
		<persname>Ralph Newman</persname>, of 
		<title render="italic" linktype="simple">The Civil War Digest</title>
		which was published by 
		<corpname>Grosset</corpname> in 1960, and a contributor to 
		<title render="italic" linktype="simple">Lincoln for the Ages</title>
		which was published in 1960 by 
		<corpname>Doubleday</corpname>. 
		<persname>E. B. Long</persname> was the editor and wrote the introduction
		to 
		<title render="italic" linktype="simple">Personal Memoirs of U. S. Grant
		  and History of the Civil War</title>, 1861-1865, and wrote the introduction to 
		<title render="italic" linktype="simple">The Post Reader of Civil War
		  Stories</title>. 
		<persname>Long</persname> wrote the abridgement and the introduction to 
		<title render="italic" linktype="simple">Stonewall Jackson and the
		  American Civil War</title>, by 
		<persname>George F. R. Henderson</persname>, and the introduction to 
		<title render="italic" linktype="simple">Four Years in Rebel
		  Capitals</title>, by 
		<persname>Thomas Cooper De Leon</persname>. He was a member of the
		editorial advisory board of 
		<corpname>Civil War History</corpname>, and of the bibliographical
		committee of 
		<corpname>Lincoln Lore</corpname>. In 1971, 
		<corpname>Doubleday</corpname> published 
		<title render="italic" linktype="simple">The Civil War Day by
		  Day</title>, 
		<persname>Long</persname>'s chronology of the 
		<subject>American Civil War</subject>. </p> 
		<p>In his research for 
		<title render="italic" linktype="simple">Centennial History of the Civil
		  War</title>, 
		<persname>Long</persname> compiled over nine million words of notes. Much
		of this material was obtained from original manuscripts, diaries, and records,
		and was gathered during trips throughout the country. He visited over 125
		libraries, universities, and archives and traveled over 60 thousand miles. In 
		<date era="ce" calendar="gregorian">1966</date>, 
		<corpname>Doubleday</corpname> presented his research notes to the 
		<corpname>Library of Congress</corpname>. He owned more than five
		thousand books, most of them about the 
		<subject>Civil War</subject> or 
		<subject>American History</subject>. </p>

		  <persname>E. B. Long</persname> died on 31 March 1981 in
