Kyle (1894-1957) Papers contains reports, correspondence, speeches, articles, applications, pamphlets, newspaper clippings, programs, pictures, memorandums, lists, and resolutions. Materials include correspondence, reports, speeches, and articles on E. J. Kyle's attempts to acquire more land and construct new buildings for the School of Agriculture at Texas A <![CDATA[&]]> M College. Other speeches and articles written by E. J. Kyle are concerned with subjects as cotton, soil conservation, and the cultivation of vegetables, fruits and nuts, particularly pecans.

         <head>Biographical Note</head>
         <p>
            <persname>Edwin  Jackson Kyle</persname>  was born in <geogname>Kyle, Tex.</geogname>, 22 July 1876, the son of  <persname>Fergus Kyle</persname> and <persname>Annie E.  Moore Kyle</persname>. <persname>E. J. Kyle</persname> graduated in 1899 with a B. S. in agriculture from <corpname>Texas A <![CDATA[&]]> M College</corpname>  (later <corpname>Texas A <![CDATA[&]]> M University</corpname>), and, in 1902 he received an M. S. in agriculture from <corpname>Cornell University</corpname>.</p>
         <p>Upon graduation from <corpname>Cornell University</corpname> in June 1902, <persname>E. J. Kyle</persname> returned to <corpname>Texas A <![CDATA[&]]> M College</corpname>  as an instructor in <subject>Horticulture</subject>.  In 1905 Kyle was promoted to <subject>Head of the Department</subject> and made full professor.  Then, in 1911, when <corpname>Texas A <![CDATA[&]]>  M</corpname> College  created the <corpname>School of Agriculture</corpname>
            <persname>E. J. Kyle </persname>was appointed  <subject>Dean of the School of Agriculture</subject>.</p>
         <p>During this time, <persname>Kyle</persname> also served as <subject>President</subject> of  the<corpname> Texas A <![CDATA[&]]> M College </corpname> <corpname>Athletic Association</corpname>, resigning in 1911 when he made <subject>Dean</subject> of the <corpname>School of Agriculture.</corpname>  Kyle was then called back to the post of President of the Athletic Association,  after <persname>Bruce LaRoche</persname> retired on account of unrest among the former students.  Kyle did not retire again from serving with the Athletic Association until 1934, was called back briefly to use his diplomatic skills again, and finally left the post for good in 1943, after the <subject>Aggies</subject> became  <subject>National Champions</subject> , winning three successive bowl games.  Due to <persname>Kyle</persname>'s accomplishments leading the Academic Association, <geogname>Kyle Field</geogname> was named after him.</p>
         <p>Not only was <persname>E. J. Kyle</persname> accomplished as a leader of the <corpname>Texas A<![CDATA[ & ]]>M College  </corpname><corpname>Athletic Association</corpname>, but, in his own field of <subject>Agriculture,</subject> founded and was the head of the <corpname>Farmer's Short Course</corpname> for several years.  <subject>Smith-Hughes Day</subject> at <corpname>Texas A <![CDATA[&]]> M College</corpname>  was also supported by <persname>Kyle</persname>, and he was successful in getting legislature through to increase the amount of land owned by  <corpname>A <![CDATA[&]]> M College</corpname> .  As an educator, <persname>E. J. Kyle</persname> was the senior author of a text book for public schools, and he also co-wrote a book on pecan cultures with <persname>H. P. Stukey</persname> titled <title render="italic">Pecan-growing</title> ( <geogname>New York</geogname> : <corpname>Macmillan</corpname>,1925).</p>
         <p>After retiring from <corpname>Texas A <![CDATA[&]]> M College</corpname>, <persname>E. J. Kyle</persname> was elected <subject>Dean Emeritus</subject>.  Although <persname>Kyle</persname> had retired, <persname>President Roosevelt</persname> appointed him as ambassador to <geogname>Guatemala</geogname>.  This area of the world was not new to <persname>E. J. Kyle</persname> because he had been there before with his activities in <subject>Inter-American Education</subject>.  <persname>E. J. Kyle</persname> was the only man in the history of the United States trained in technical agriculture and education to be appointed an <subject>Ambassador</subject>.   <persname>E. J. Kyle</persname> was so successful in <geogname>Guatemala</geogname> that upon leaving he received that country's highest decoration <subject><emph render="doublequote">The Order of the Quetzal</emph></subject>.</p>
         <p>Along with the rest of <persname>E. J. Kyle</persname>'s honors are that he was in <title render="italic">Who's Who</title>, <title render="italic">Who's Who for American Authors</title>, <title render="italic">Who's Who for American Men of Science</title>, <title render="italic">Who's Who in Latin America</title>, <title render="italic">Biographical Encyclopedia of the World</title>, <title render="italic">Leaders in Education</title>, <title render="italic">Who's Who in American Education</title>, <title render="italic">Who's Who in the South and Southwest</title>,<title render="italic"> International Who's Who</title>, and <title render="italic">Who's Who in Federal Administration</title>.</p><p>On 21 Dec. 1904, Kyle had married Alice Myers and they had one daughter. 
After many years of service to <corpname>Texas A<![CDATA[ & ]]>M College</corpname>, E. J.          <p> The 
            <persname>E. J. Kyle</persname> (1894-1957) Papers contains reports, correspondence, speeches, articles, applications, pamphlets, newspaper clippings, programs, pictures, memorandums, lists, and resolutions.  Materials include correspondence, reports, speeches, and articles on <persname>E. J.  Kyle</persname>'s attempts to acquire more land and construct new buildings for the <subject>School of Agriculture</subject> at <corpname>Texas A <![CDATA[&]]> M College</corpname>.  Other speeches and articles written by  <persname>E. J. Kyle</persname>  are concerned with subjects as cotton, soil conservation, and the cultivation of  vegetables, fruits and nuts, particularly pecans.</p><p>Also present are reports  <persname>Kyle</persname> wrote pertaining to <corpname>Texas A <![CDATA[&]]> M College</corpname>'s enrollment plans and teaching techniques in <subject>Agricultural</subject> classes.    Since <persname>Kyle</persname> was the head of many different programs at <corpname>Texas A <![CDATA[&]]> M College</corpname>, his papers contain applications and other information regarding the <subject>Land Prize</subject>, <subject>Anderson-Clayton Company Scholarship</subject>, and programs on <subject>Short Courses</subject> taught from 1913 to 1936.  In addition to his academic duties, <persname>Kyle</persname> was also deeply involved with various types of research and the papers contain a few of the booklets, articles, and resolutions pertaining to the  <subject>Soil Erosion Project</subject>, <subject>Frozen Food Research</subject>, and <subject>Texas Wildlife Research.</subject></p><p>Correspondence in the papers deals with not only <persname>E. J. Kyle</persname>'s work, but also contains letters from former students, commendations sent to <persname>Kyle</persname>, and letters concerning the naming of <geogname>Kyle Field</geogname> sports arena on the <corpname>Texas A <![CDATA[&]]> M College</corpname> campus. </p><p>Photographs contained in the collection are pertain to agricultural topics, such as cattle and pecan trees, the <subject>NYA</subject> program, <corpname>Texas A <![CDATA[&]]> M College</corpname> buildings, <corpname>Texas A <![CDATA[&]]> M College</corpname> football teams and sports events, and <geogname>Kyle Field</geogname>.Several football team rosters,  programs from football games, newspaper clippings about sports events, and correspondence dealing with <persname>Kyle</persname>'s position on the <corpname>Athletic Council</corpname> represent Kyle's close connection with many of the  <corpname>Texas A <![CDATA[&]]> M College</corpname> athletics program.  </p><p>Also present is a certificate of Kyle's appointment to the <corpname>Farm Credit Association</corpname>.</p>
