British poet and novelist, Roy Broadbent Fuller (1912-1991), was born in Failsworth, Lancashire, but moved with him family to Blackpool after his father died. Admitted as a solicitor in 1934, he married Kathleen Smith in 1936. With their young son and only child, John Fuller, the couple moved to London just before the outbreak of World War II. There, Roy Fuller joined the Woolwich Equitable Building Society, a home-mortgage company, with whom he remained until his retirement in 1987. Fuller only left the Woolwich for military duty during World War II, from 1941-1946, when he served as a Lieutenant with the Royal Navy, first as a radar mechanic in Kenya, then as a radio and radar officer at the Admiralty. As one of the most significant of the World War II English poets, Fuller spoke in a more studied manner, and with the voice of the home-front denizen, rather than that of the fighting man. He was identified with The Movement, a postwar group of British poets generally dedicated to robust and ironic poems, forthright in tone and often intricate in versification. Other poets in The Movement included Philip Larkin, Donald Davie, D.J. Enright, Elizabeth Jennings, and Thom Gunn. Roy Fuller died in Blackheath, London 27 September 1991. This collection consists chiefly of correspondence between Roy Fuller and Julian Symons, representing a relationship which started on terms of business and grew to a close friendship. The correspondents are primarily Roy Fuller and Julian Symons with occasional addendums from Kate Fuller to Roy Fuller's letters. Also present are letters from John Fuller to the Symons'; letters and post cards from Roy Fuller to Jack Clark, many regarding the Poem-of-the-Month Club; and Roy Fuller to Sebastian Barker. Most of the letters from John Fuller and one from Kate Fuller were written after Roy Fuller's death. Other items include poems, obituaries, newspaper clippings, and pamphlets pertaining to Roy Fuller's life and/or subjects exchanged between Fuller and Clark.

         <head>Scope and Content Note</head>
<p>Series one of this collection of correspondence, containing over 275 letters, serves to portray the longtime relationship between <persname>Roy Fuller</persname> and <persname>Julian Symons</persname> which started on terms of business and grew to a close friendship. The letters are primarily from <persname>Roy Fuller</persname> to <persname>Julian Symons</persname> with occasional addendums from <persname>Kate Fuller</persname>. There are several letters from <persname>Julian Symons</persname> in response. In addition, there are some letters from <persname>John Fuller</persname> to the Symons', from <persname>Roy Fuller</persname> to <persname>Jack Clark</persname>, and from <persname>Roy Fuller </persname>to <persname>Sebastian Barker</persname>. The folder list contains a brief description of each individual letter and its focus, often with a list of Subjects. Especially lyrical and poetic are Roy Fuller's <subject>war letters</subject> starting when he was stationed in <geogname>Africa</geogname> (<geogname>Kenya</geogname> and <geogname>Nairobi</geogname>) and Ariel through the office of the <corpname>Admiralty</corpname> (folders 1000-1370). </p>
<p>Series two consists of 64 letters from <persname>Roy Fuller</persname> with three annotations from <persname>Jack Clark</persname> and five from <persname>Kate Fuller</persname>, one letter from<persname> Jack Clark</persname>, one from <persname>Kate Fuller</persname>, six from <persname>John Fuller</persname>, Roy Fuller's son, and several others from miscellaneous individuals. The letters from <persname>Roy Fuller</persname> date from 1958 to 1990 and are primarily handwritten <subject>post cards</subject> to <persname>Jack Clark</persname>, Co-founder of the <corpname>Poem-of-the-Month Club</corpname>. Many of these letters are regarding or, at least, in reference to Fuller's position as <subject>advisory</subject> to the <corpname>Poem-of-the-Month Club</corpname>. However, Fuller and Clark were also close friends, and Fuller feels free, in these letters, to discuss everything from his <subject>failing health</subject> to how he met his wife, along with many other personal remarks. Most of the letters from <persname>John Fuller</persname> and the one from <persname>Kate Fuller</persname> were written after Roy Fuller's death. The few other items in this series of the collections include <subject>poems</subject>, <subject>obituaries</subject>, <subject>newspaper clippings</subject>, and <subject>pamphlets</subject> pertaining to Roy Fuller's life and/or subjects exchanged between Fuller and Clark.</p>

         <head>Biographical Note</head>
<p>British poet and novelist, <persname>Roy Broadbent Fuller</persname> was born in <geogname>Failsworth, Lancashire</geogname> 11 February 1912. After the death of their father, Roy Fuller and his brother, along with their mother, <persname>Nellie Broadbent Fuller</persname>, moved to <geogname>Blackpool</geogname>. Admitted as a <persname>solicitor</persname> in 1934, he then married <persname>Kathleen Smith</persname> in 1936. With their young son and only child, <persname>John Fuller</persname>, the couple moved to <geogname>London</geogname> just before the outbreak of <subject>World War II</subject>. There, Roy Fuller joined the <corpname>Woolwich Equitable Building Society</corpname>, a <subject>home-mortgage company</subject>, with whom he remained until his <subject>retirement</subject> in 1987. Fuller left the <corpname>Woolwich</corpname> for <subject>military duty </subject>during <subject>World War II</subject>, from 1941-1946, when he served as a Lieutenant with the <corpname>Royal Navy</corpname>, first as a <subject>radar mechanic</subject> in <geogname>Kenya</geogname>, then as a radio and <subject>radar officer</subject> at the <corpname>Admiralty</corpname>. As soon as the war ended and he was <subject>demoblized</subject>, Fuller returned to the <corpname>Woolwich</corpname>, rising from <subject>Assistant Solicitor</subject>, to <subject>Solicitor to the Society</subject> (1958-1969), and finally to Director (1969-1987). </p>
<p> The influence of <persname>William Wordsworth</persname>, <persname>Hugh Wystan Auden</persname>, and to some extent <persname>Alexander Pope</persname>, were apparent in Fuller's earliest published poetry, <title render="italic" linktype="simple">Poems </title>(<geogname>London</geogname>: <corpname>Fortune</corpname>, 1939). Though <title render="italic" linktype="simple">Poems</title> spoke to the fear and tension engendered by the <subject>Spanish Civil War</subject>, Fuller's next two books of poetry, <title render="italic" linktype="simple">The Middle of a War</title> (<geogname>London</geogname>: <corpname>Hogarth Press</corpname>, 1944), and <title render="italic" linktype="simple">A Lost Season</title> (<geogname>London</geogname>: <corpname>Hogarth Press</corpname>,1944) are refreshed and informed more by his own <subject>war experiences</subject>, particularly the less glamorous aspects of tedium, and shortages suffered by most of the civilian population in England at the time. Fuller credited the discipline of <subject>military life</subject> with the precision and complex structure of this more mature <subject>poetic style</subject>. The time Fuller spent in <geogname>East Africa </geogname>was particularly valuable in providing time to write and new experiences to explore, especially those of a generally urbane and family-oriented <subject>Englishman</subject> faced with the possibilities of <subject>violence</subject> and early <subject>death</subject>, the persistance of <subject>loneliness</subject> for loved ones and well-known scenes, and the ever-present vicissitudes of difficult and often boring <subject>war-time travel</subject>. Africa's influence on Fuller was profound, as evidenced in several poems from <title render="italic" linktype="simple">A Lost Season</title>. Fuller's sense of war's darkness was highlighted by the <subject>exotic</subject> and primal aspects of the <subject>African landscape</subject>. As one of the most significant of the <subject>World War II</subject> English poets, Fuller spoke in a more studied manner, and with the voice of the <subject>home-front</subject> denizen, rather than that of the fighting man. </p>
<p>After the end of <subject>World War II</subject> and his demobilization, Fuller continued writing and publishing important poetry, but he also turned to writing fiction, including <title render="italic" linktype="simple">Savage Gold</title> (1946), a collection of <subject>boy's adventure tales</subject>, which also draws on the author's fascination with <geogname>Kenya</geogname>, and <title render="italic" linktype="simple">With My Little Eye</title> (1948), a work on <subject>crime detection</subject>. Subsequent to the immediate postwar lull in literary activity, English poets by the 1950s seemed to coalesce into a group eventually called <subject>The Movement</subject>. This group was generally dedicated to robust and ironic poems, forthright in tone and often intricate in versification. Before the war, Fuller's work had already become famous for these very characteristics; thus, he emerged as both <subject>The Movemen</subject>t's father figure and a link between English poetry of the 1930s and 1950s. Other poets in <subject>The Movement</subject> included <persname>Philip Larkin</persname>, <persname>Donald Davie</persname>, <persname>D.J. Enright</persname>, <persname>Elizabeth Jennings</persname>, and <persname>Thom Gunn</persname>. Two important anthologies of these poets' work including poems by Fuller, <title render="italic" linktype="simple">New Lines: an Anthology</title>, and <title render="italic" linktype="simple">New Lines II</title>, were edited by <persname>Robert Conquest</persname> and published by <corpname>Macmillian</corpname> in 1956 and 1963 respectively. During this interesting period of English literary development Fuller published two more verse collections and four novels.</p>
<p>Noteworthy among Fuller's postwar works are three books of poetry. <title render="italic" linktype="simple">Epitaphs and Occasions </title>(1949) owed much to 18th century poetry's assertion of civilization's need for balance in viewpoint and poetic style, as well as complexity and integrity of poetic execution. <title render="italic" linktype="simple">Counterparts</title> (1954); and <title render="italic" linktype="simple">Brutus's Orchard</title> (1957) presented Fuller's wry honesty and increasingly more assertively dramatic poetic voice, recalling the classical literary influences propounded by the <subject>18th century poets</subject> themselves. Again <persname>Wordsworth</persname>'s influence was also noticeable. By 1962, when Fuller's <title render="italic" linktype="simple">Collected Poems: 1936-1961</title> appeared, he was acknowledged as one of the leading poets of the post-Auden generation. <title render="italic" linktype="simple">Buff</title> (1965) contained the third <subject>sonnet sequence</subject> published by Fuller, and <title render="italic" linktype="simple">New Poems</title> (1968) won the <subject>Duff Cooper Memorial Prize</subject>. Not as romantic as <persname>Dylan Thomas</persname> or <persname>George Barker</persname>, Fuller persistently grew as a poet and by the end of his career possesed a dryly witty, ironic and dramatic style, always humane and honest in its evaluation of the writer himself, as well as the society in which he lived and to which he owed his best efforts as a citizen of the world..</p>
         <p> Not only a poet and novelist, but a formidable <subject>civic servant</subject>, Fuller served as the Vice-President of the <corpname>Buildings Societies Association</corpname> (1969-1987); a Governor of the <corpname>BBC</corpname> (1972-1979); member of the <corpname>Arts Council</corpname> (1976-1977); Member of the <corpname>Library Advisory Council for England</corpname> (1977-1979). Other awards and honors included the <subject>Queen's Medal for Poetry</subject> (1970); the <subject>Cholmondeley Award</subject>, <corpname>Society of Authors</corpname> (1980); and an <subject>honorary D.Litt., University of Kent</subject> (1986). Fuller's <subject>autobiography</subject> was published over the course of several years in several volumes; <title render="italic" linktype="simple">Souvenirs</title> (1980); <title render="italic" linktype="simple">Vamp Till Ready</title> (1982); <title render="italic" linktype="simple">Home and Dry</title> (1984); <title render="italic" linktype="simple">The Strange and the Good: Complete Memoirs</title> (1989).
