Historical NoteThe first discussion about the feasibility of establishing a Graduate Program in Religious Education was between the University of St. Thomas President, William J. Young, and a committee studying religious education in the Diocese of Galveston-Houston in the spring of 1967. Establishment of such a program to provide professional training to religious educators in this area was of the recommendation of the diocesan study and a committee was formed to initiate planning. The Institute of Religious Studies opened on the UST campus on June 13, 1971 and operates under the Dean of the School of Theology, with its own director, staff and faculty. It is largely a summer program. The MRE Program is a professional program of studies designed to prepare qualified personnel to work for Christian renewal in the field of religious education. It is multidisciplinary and thematic in design; lecturers from various disciplines are invited for one or two weeks to bring their expertise to bear upon each year’s theme. The program is open to persons of all faiths who meet the admission requirements.
