Historical Note

The advent of the mass production of books and the accompanying rise of literacy in Western culture during the modern era made it possible for individuals and families of modest means to own a copy of the Bible. Such Bibles were often personalized with hand annotations detailing family relationships and lifespans and then inherited by succeeding generations.

As the principal bibliographic resource at Southern Methodist University (SMU) for the fields of theology and religious studies, Bridwell Library has received numerous family Bibles as gifts from persons affiliated with SMU or with the United Methodist Church. For many years the majority of family Bibles bearing genealogical inscriptions have been viewed primarily as documentary artifacts and placed under the jurisdiction of the archives. In 2017 the archival collection of family Bibles was documented and rehoused. Genealogical inscription pages from Bibles deemed not to be in usable condition were extracted and rehoused in folders. Enclosures discovered within the family Bibles were also foldered and preserved for future study.

Series 2: Family Bible data and enclosures, circa 1788 – circa 1990
1 box

The second series comprises twenty folders with information about and from the collection. The first folder contains a circa 1990 inventory of the “Bridwell Library Archives Bibles.” The five folders titled “family Bible data” contain pages of family records extracted from Bibles that were determined to be in unusable condition. The remaining fourteen folders house the various manuscript, print, and photographic enclosures found in the Bibles that constitute the first series of this collection. Removing the enclosures from the Bibles enhances the preservation of both.
