Historical Note

The materials in this collection were collected by the Mary McCord/Edyth Renshaw Collection on the Performing Arts [which originated as the McCord Theatre Museum at Southern Methodist University] between 1933 and 1990 from various unidentified donors. The material was transferred to the Hamon Arts Library in 1990.

This collection of film materials encompasses many different fields within the subject of cinema during the mid-20th century.


Scope and Contents of the Collection

The materials consist of correspondence, ephemera, manuscripts, programs and publicity in relation to the art of cinema and film. This collection does not contain physical films.

Acquisition Information

The Collection of documents on the motion picture industry was acquired as a component of the McCord/Renshaw Collection on the Performing Arts. The McCord/Renshaw Collection originated as the McCord Theatre Museum at Southern Methodist University in 1933. It was transferred to the Hamon Arts Library in 1990.

Processing Information

The Collection of documents on the motion picture industry was received in no discernable order. During its processing, the collection was divided into separate files. Folded documents were flattened, and the papers were arranged alphabetically/chronologically by subject and medium, placed in acid-free folders, and stored in acid-free boxes.

Detailed Description of the Collection

Series 1: Correspondence, circa 1934-1984

The correspondence contains letters from individuals such as Paul Muni as well as Christmas cards from Mae West (1934) and Mary Martin and Richard Halliday.

Series 2: Ephemera, 1937-1939

The ephemera contains ticket stubs and a menu from the Paramount Studio Café. Of particular note is a flyer for the First Annual Motion Picture Ball at Hotel Roosevelt in 1939.

Series 3:Film Festivals, circa 1973-1991

This series contains ephemera, newsletters, programs and publicity relating to film festivals, primarily the USA Film Festival from 1973-1991. The USA Film Festival was held at Southern Methodist University from 1971 through the mid 1980s.

Series 4: David Lesan, circa 1937

This series contains 1937 correspondence regarding Some Like it Hot (1939) as well as Lesan’s 1937 contract. It also contains outlines and sketches for Cowboy and the Countess (undated).

Series 5: Manuscripts, circa 1929

The manuscripts contain a detailed list of films playing in Dallas in 1929, several unknown manuscripts with the titles Paramount, Blair and RBC and articles and related material on The History of Sound Recording by Col. Nathan Levinson, chief sound engineer, Warner Brothers Studios.
