Collection of Methodist Episcopal Church, South lantern slides

Overview

Creator: Methodist Episcopal Church, South
Title: Collection of Methodist Episcopal Church, South lantern slides
Dates: Circa 1919-1923
Abstract: The glass lantern slides in this collection were produced by the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, as visual aids for promoting the denomination’s international and domestic missionary work. These hand-colored slides feature images of Brazil, Cuba, China, Russia, Florida, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Virginia. All slides were produced in the late 1910s or the early 1920s and bear the markings of the Board of Missions of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, or the “Centenary Commission, M.E.C.S.” The Centenary Commission raised funds for evangelistic and benevolent missionary enterprises in observance of the one hundredth anniversary of the formation of the Missionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1819.

Historical Note

The Missionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church was founded in New York in 1819 to aid Annual Conferences in their efforts to spread the Gospel through evangelization and charitable work both within and beyond the United States of America. One year later, in 1820, the Missionary Society became an official General Conference agency.

Following the separation of 1844, Southern Methodists organized their own Missionary Society in 1846 to facilitate “missionary labors at home and in foreign countries.” During the Centenary Movement of 1919 to 1923, the Northern and Southern churches cooperated to celebrate American Methodism’s missionary character and history by funding expanded missionary programs. In 1939 the missionary agencies of the Methodist Episcopal Church, the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, and the Methodist Protestant Church merged to become the Board of Missions and Church Extension of the Methodist Church.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

The Bridwell Library Collection of Methodist Episcopal Church, South lantern slides comprises 126 glass slides containing images and texts designed to be projected and discussed with church groups interested in learning about Southern Methodist missional outreach during and immediately after the First World War. Most of the slides show Methodist missionaries, bishops, gatherings, agencies, churches, schools, and hospitals. Some slides illustrate the cultural contexts of the various mission fields. Others point out social problems of the day. All slides were intended to illicit support for the expansion of denominational missionary efforts.
