Biographical Note

Andrew Longacre was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on June 12, 1831, to Eliza Stiles Longacre (1807-1850) and artist James Barton Longacre (1794-1869). James Barton Longacre was a portraitist and engraver who served as the fourth Chief Engraver of the United States for twenty-five years beginning in 1844.

Andrew Longacre grew up in a devout Methodist family. He joined Union Methodist Episcopal Church, Philadelphia, at the age of twelve and sensed a calling to enter the ministry seven years later, in 1850. In 1852 Longacre joined the Philadelphia Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Four years later, in 1856, he was granted a medical leave of absence. In 1860 he resumed his ministerial work, serving at the American Chapel in Paris (now the American Church in Paris), as assistant to Rev. John McClintock, D.D. (1814-1870).

In 1862 Rev. Longacre returned to the United States where he held pastoral appointments in Philadelphia, Baltimore, New York City, and Newburgh, New York over the next forty years. He served as a trustee of Drew Theological Seminary, Madison, New Jersey, from 1883 to 1906 and of Wesleyan University, Middletown, Connecticut, from 1885 to 1901. Longacre retired from the ministry in 1902 and died at his residence in New York City on February 18, 1906. He is remembered as a dedicated church leader, a popular public speaker, and a talented artist and poet.

Andrew Longacre married Lydia Eastwick (1850-1918) in 1869. Their six children were Barton Longacre, Lydia Eastwick Longacre, Henry Baker Longacre, Sarah S. Longacre Bennett, Frederick Van Duzer Longacre, and Breta Longacre.

Series 3: Ministerial Records and Personal Papers, 1852-1906
64 folders

The final series contains folders of ministerial and financial records, including notes for sermons, Sunday School lessons, and other public addresses, lists of weddings officiated, poems, prayers, ephemeral publications from churches and church-related agencies, and two drawings. Items of special note include the two drawings of Andrew Longacre’s apartment in Paris and a copy of the sermon Longacre preached on April 19, 1865 honoring the memory of President Abraham Lincoln. Parenthetical envelope numbers indicate Andrew Longacre’s original arrangement of materials in a filing system utilizing very acidic, string-bound envelopes. The original envelopes were photocopied and disposed of during processing in 2016.
