Biographical Note

John Holmes Jenkins III was born in Beaumont, Texas on March 22, 1940. When he was ten years old he cashed a hundred dollar bond his uncle gifted him at birth and started his own rare book and coin business, Southwestern Investment Association. He later liquidated the business after high school and spent the proceeds on a three month honeymoon. As a high school student Jenkins wrote articles published in national magazines as well as his first book, Recollections of Early Texas. This memoir of his great-great-grandfather, John Holland Jenkins, was published by the University of Texas Press.

Jenkins graduated from the University of Texas on a General Motors Fellowship, and attended a year of law school before starting his own publishing and book selling businesses. These businesses included the Pemberton Press, Jenkins Publishing Company, San Felipe Press, and Country Store Gallery. Jenkins’ business interests included art, antiques, rare books, oil properties, and general investments. When the stock of Edward Eberstadt & Sons became available for sale in 1975 in New York, Jenkins purchased it and cemented his reputation as a major dealer of rare books and manuscripts.

This purchase was described in Jenkins’ 1976 autobiographical book, Audubon and Other Capers. He also wrote about his involvement in recovering a stolen copy of John James Audubon’s Birds of America for Union College. This experience contributed to his development of a system in publicizing thefts from institutions and booksellers, and he later served as chairman of the security committee of the Antiquarian Booksellers Association of America.

Jenkins is known as the editor of two major Texas bibliographies. The ten volume work, Papers of the Texas Revolution (1973), is a bibliography of Texas primary sources, while Basic Texas Books (1983) is a descriptive bibliography of major works about Texas history. His many honors and memberships include a lifetime fellowship to the Texas State Historical Association, honorary doctorate from Union College, president of the Antiquarian Booksellers Association of America, founding director of the Collectors’ Institute, and member of the Texas Institute of Letters, the Texas Philosophical Society, and the Dallas Petroleum Club. Jenkins was also a poker player nicknamed “Austin Squatty,” and won the Amarillo Slim tournament in Las Vegas two months before he died.

In 1962, John Jenkins married Maureen Mooney and they had one son, John Holmes Jenkins IV in 1968. Jenkins lived in Austin, Texas until his death in 1989 in Bastrop, Texas where he was researching his last book. Edward Burleson : Texas Frontier Leader was published posthumously in 1990 and coauthored by Jenkins’ cousin, Kenneth Kesselus.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

The bulk of this collection contains correspondence and materials about John Jenkins bookselling and publication businesses. Some personal correspondence, schoolwork, and documents are located in the first two series. Series 3-4 contain Jenkins’ speeches, as well as files for the various organizations in which he was a member and held leadership positions. The fifth series contains Jenkins’ records for his publishing, bookselling, and art gallery businesses, as well as a subseries for his various real estate holdings. Jenkins also has a few business records for film production ventures. The sixth series contains four boxes of business correspondence that includes the DeGolyer Foundation, Henry Miller, Larry McMurtry, and fellow booksellers like Dorman David.

The seventh series contains Jenkins’ correspondence with notable Texas politicians. Researchers should note that when Jenkins was a high school student, he corresponded with Texas Governor Allan Shivers and these early letters can be found in the second series. Jenkins and Shivers later continue their correspondence and it can be found in the seventh series.

The eighth series contains correspondence, reviews, and royalty statements for the authors published by Jenkins. The ninth series contains Jenkins’ notes, drafts, and publicity for works he wrote or edited. He kept his research files for his work, Basic Texas Books: an Annotated bibliography of Selected Works for a Research Library, published by the Texas State Historical Association in 1987. Researchers should note there are a few original manuscript items: an endorsed treasury warrant for John Salmon Ford signed by Sam Houston; two letters by Francis Lubbock; and a subscription to the Galveston Weekly News signed by Willard Richardson.

The last series contains the papers of Joe Frantz (1917-1993), a Texas historian who published many books while he was a professor at the University of Texas. This series contains correspondence, speeches, manuscripts, and photographs.
