Historical Note

The SMU School of Design opened in 1944 as part of Art Department in the College of Arts and Sciences. SMU partnered with the Dallas Fashion and Sportswear center to train designers that would meet the needs of local manufacturers of apparel for women and girls with the distinctive style of the Southwest. The School of Design closed in 1965.

Stella La Mond was the founding Director of the School. La Mond received a B.S. in Music and Art from Peabody in 1926 and an M.A. from Columbia in 1930. She joined Southern Methodist University as an assistant professor in the Art Department in 1937 and became a Professor in the Art department in 1937, a position she held until her retirement on July 1, 1959.

The SMU School of Design included a 4 year Costume Design B.A. program, as well as a 2 year non-degree course in Costume Design. In addition, the Medical Art B.A. Program was offered from 1945-1957 and students took courses at the SMU School of Design and at Southwestern Medical College.

Processing Information

Although the collection was re-foldered, folders were essentially retained in the ordered that they were originally boxed. Paperclips were removed. No preservation photocopying of newspaper clipping was done. Materials inside folders were arranged in chronological order. When there was no folder title, the processor assigned a folder title, a fairly infrequent occurrence.
