Biographical Note

Jan Kirsten (1943-1990) graduated high school in Annapolis, attended Ripon College, and St. John’s College in Annapolis. His father served in the United States Coast Guard, and there is one letter in Kirsten’s personal correspondence folder regarding a patrol event while Kirsten’s father was stationed on the USCGC Mackinac in 1957. Kirsten was an avid railroad modeler, which accounts for his correspondence with railroads and his large collection of locomotive drawings.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

The bulk of this collection contains technical drawings of locomotives built by various builders, but Baldwin Locomotive Works is well represented. Although some have dates as early as 1901, they appear to be photocopies. Also included are photographs, postcards, and newspaper clippings about railroads. The first series contains papers from Jan Kirsten’s high school and college years, as well as correspondence with railroads regarding his railroad model hobby.
