Biographical Note

Mary Lou Gammill was born in Arbala, Texas in 1931. She grew up on a farm, attended elementary school in Seymore, Texas, and later graduated from Sulphur Springs High School. After receiving her Bachelor of Science degree in Journalism from Texas State College for Women in 1951, she moved to Chicago with her husband, Marty Cimarolli, and had a son, Jim, and daughter, Maria. After her husband died in 1968, Mary Cimarolli moved back to Sulphur Springs, Texas and returned to school. As a single mother of two children, she commuted to Commerce, Texas while earning her master’s degree in English (1972) and doctorate in Education (1977) from East Texas State University.

While working for Dallas Community College District in 1977, Cimarolli met and married Jack Robottom, Director of Development for DCCCD. She taught English at Richland College beginning in the 1970s until her retirement in 1995. Her second career in creative writing has produced award-winning poetry, a biography, a memoir, and the honor of being a finalist for the A.C. and Judy Greene Literary Festival competition twice for her playwriting. Cimarolli’s most notable works are a biography of Father Paul Barrus, her English professor at ETSU who retired to become a Catholic priest, and her East Texas childhood memoir entitled The Bootlegger’s Other Daughter. Her memoir of Depression-era rural East Texas through the beginning of World War II is described by Rebecca Sharpless of Baylor University as “farm life noir.”

Mary Cimarolli lives with her husband, Jack Robottom, in Richardson, Texas and Angel Fire, New Mexico.
