Lawrence Clark Powell (1906-2001) was born in Washington, D.C. and moved to South Pasadena, California as a child. After receiving his B.A. from Occidental College, and PhD. from the University of Dijon in France, Powell began a long career at the University of California Los Angeles in 1938. He was director of the William Andrews Clark Library at UCLA from 1944-1966 and was the first Dean of UCLA’s School of Library Service in 1960. Upon Powell’s retirement from UCLA in 1966, UCLA’s main library was named for him. In the 1970s, he moved to Tucson, Arizona, and was instrumental in the development in the University of Arizona’s library and Graduate School of Library Science. Powell continued to write on a variety of subjects, such as literature, the book trade, travel, and is known for his contributions to the literature of the library profession.
