Historical Note

Founded in 1915, Southern Methodist University Woman’s Club has been in existence since the opening of the university. At the time, there was no way for the faculty members’ wives to become acquainted with each other. In the fall of 1915, Julia Morrison, wife of J. Ray Morrison, Lucy G. Campbell Kern, wife of Paul.B. Kern, and May Payne McIntosh, wife of John S. McIntosh, along with sixteen other women, created The Faculty Wives Club.

The next year, membership was broadened to include female faculty and executive heads. The Faculty Wives Club then became the University Woman’s Club of Southern Methodist University. The club’s name changed again in 1968 to its current name: the Southern Methodist University Woman’s Club.

The SMU Woman’s Club is a social club, in which women congregate to discuss current events, produce plays, and volunteer for the university community in the spirit of friendship.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

This collection contains the records of the Southern Methodist University Woman’s Club from 1915-present. These records are largely comprised of but are not limited to: minutes, financial statements, event flyers, booklets known as yearbooks, and scrapbooks.

In an attempt to keep the records as intact as possible and for ease of access, the materials are organized by school year, as that is how the SMU Woman’s Club itself is organized.

Series 2 is comprised of the bound minutes of the SMU Woman’s Club as recorded by the club’s secretary. The secretary’s minutes detail the discussions and decisions of each meeting ranging from social events to budgetary matters; the bound treasurer’s minutes deal with only budgetary matters detailing the club’s finances. Series 1 dates from 1919-1972.

Series 3 is comprised of the records of the SMU Woman’s Club presidents from 1915 to 2002. Each folder is divided by club president and contains materials from her presidency ranging from minutes and financial records to programs and social flyers. The materials from the 1915/16-1955/56 years could not accurately be dated and were instead roughly divided by decade. Most of the materials within this series are not bound.

Series 4:
Yearbooks

Series 4 is comprised of the SMU Woman’s Club yearbooks, published annually from 1918 to the present. Yearbooks list past presidents and the current officers, contain information on current members, mention the year’s events, contain the current by-laws, and have forms for sustentation endeavors. The first folder in this series is organized differently from the others because those yearbooks were received bound together; however, some of these yearbooks are duplicated in other folders within the series.

Series 5 is comprised of the SMU Woman’s Club membership booklets, published in four volumes from 1956 to 2000. These booklets list the names of members and their department or their husband’s department at SMU, and also provide biographical information about each member.

Series 6 contains the SMU Woman’s Club scrapbooks from 1939-2009. Most of the scrapbooks are bound by club year; however, the 1940-1944 scrapbooks were received bound together. The 1993/94 Scrapbook also contains loose photographs in labeled envelopes. The 1998/99 Scrapbook contains loose photographs that are not labeled.
