The Texas Methodist Student Movement (later the Texas Commission on Campus Ministry) was established by the five Texas Conferences in 1926 to promote and foster religious goals among students attending state colleges and universities. The Texas Methodist Student Movement records contains 17 linear feet of correspondence, minutes, financial records, pamphlets, books, evaluations and studies, schedules of events, annual reports, and photographs produced and collected by the organization from 1896-1981. |

At the call of Dr. Glenn Finn, a small group of Methodist college workers and other interested persons from across Texas met in Dallas in 1922 to discuss student ministry needs. Meeting participants decided that a statewide organization should be formed to promote religious objectives among the 9,000 Methodist students in Texas. To that end, they recommended that a conference be held to consider forming such an organization.
On February 2-4, 1923, more than one hundred students from twenty-two schools met at Georgetown, Texas to establish the Texas Methodist Student Federation. The federation’s constitution and by-laws addressed four major concerns: the need for a closer fellowship among Methodist students of the state; the need for stronger church consciousness and a more vital church affiliation; the need for more effective coordination and union of the agencies doing religious work; and the need for a more vigorous and adequate approach to the problem of their Christian nurture and development.
Due to rising interest in ministry to students, the Methodist Episcopal Church, South annual conferences of Texas authorized a special joint commission to evaluate the nature and extent of the student ministries on college campuses. This study commission recommended the establishment of an Interconference Commission on Methodist Campus Ministry to provide overall supervision and support for campus ministry throughout the state. The commission began its work in 1926. In 1935, the name of the commission was changed to the Texas Methodist Student Movement (TMSM).
The commission’s responsibilities grew to include the establishment of a state-wide program, the solicitation of capital funds for the building of campus ministry centers and parsonages (for which it often held legal title), the enlisting and training of campus ministers, the reporting of data at each of the annual conferences, and the general supervision of the programs at each center.
Establishment of local centers and their ministries depended upon local interest while the state organization provided general promotion and supervision. A state office was organized in the 1940s, and by the 1960s the office, through the state director, supervised twenty-seven Wesley Foundations and coordinated student ministry programs for all of the Methodist colleges located in Texas.
The movement was disestablished in 1967 in favor of ecumenical campus ministry. After the union of The Methodist Church and the Evangelical United Brethren Church in 1968, each annual conference began to assume responsibility for the Wesley Foundations within its boundaries. The Texas Commission on Campus Ministry (TCCM) replaced the state office of the TMSM. TCCM’s role was primarily promotional and programatic rather than maintaining property and training ministers. The TCCM disbanded in 1983.

The Texas Methodist Student Movement (1926-1967) and The Texas Commission on Campus Ministry (1968-1983) brought The Methodist Church to college communities in Texas. Through organized fellowships in Methodist colleges and through Wesley Foundations at state and independent colleges and universities, the organization sought to provide for the spiritual, moral, and social needs of students. The Texas Methodist Student Movement records (17 linear feet) document the structure and activities of the group. The collection includes correspondence, financial records, minutes, pamphlets, books, newspaper articles, photographs, building plans, annual reports, and a cassette tape.

Deposited in 1980 and donated in 2009 by Roger L. Loyd.
This collection contains office files retained during the administrations of a number of TMSM staff members over 40 years. The records were originally gathered from files and placed in boxes with little attention to chronological or thematic order. In 1980, Roger Loyd left his position as State Director of the TCCM to join the staff of Bridwell Library and brought the state office files with him for archival deposit at the library. The files from the final three years of the Commission were given to Loyd to deposit with the original material.
This collection was arranged and described in 2011 by Allison Osborn.
Robert Monk compiled an inventory for each box, created file labels, and provided dates for each file in 2009. He left the folders in their original order. Monk’s file labels have been maintained. While the folders have been reordered, the contents of each folder remain in the original order. Typically, the newest documents are at the front of the folder and the oldest at the back. The books and most of the pamphlets found in the ninth series, Publications, were originally loose materials.
Twenty publications available in the Bridwell Library circulating collections were removed from the collection. A list of these removed items is located in the Archives Subject File “Texas Methodist Student Movement.”

The series contains sixty-nine folders of minutes, correspondence, pamphlets, ballots, and handouts. The records detail the activities and decisions of each group. |

|
|
The second series is a collection of fifty-one folders of annual reports, warranty deeds, correspondence, minutes, constitution revisions, and financial documents. Until the 1950s, the Board of Trustees was referred to as the Interconference Commission. The Board of Trustees included faculty, students, local pastors, and laymen. Also, the Board held the middle position in the TMSM structural hierarchy. The Board reported to the five Texas Conferences and oversaw Wesley Foundations and campus-church relations. |
