Southern Methodist University Philatelic Center records

A Guide to the Collection

Overview

Creator: Southern Methodist University
Title: Southern Methodist University Philatelic Center records
Inclusive Dates: 1970s
Abstract: Formed in 1972, the Southern Methodist University Philatelic Center was an SMU organization dedicated to supporting stamp collecting in the local area. The Center hosted annual symposia in stamp collecting, sponsored workshops at SMU and served as a vehicle for tax-deductible donations of money or philatelic materials for the furtherance of philately in the region. Although the organization’s beginnings looked hopeful, interest in the Center quickly waned and it disbanded itself in 1976 due to lack of support. The organization’s records include correspondence, executive committee meeting minutes, memos, newspaper and magazine articles, and financial reports.

Historical Note

Conceived in the fall of 1971 and created the following spring, the Southern Methodist University Philatelic Center grew out of an informal stamp collecting course taught at SMU by Dallas businessman Harold Wineburgh in 1970 and 1971. Other key members were Dr. Keith Baker, Eugene K Sanger, Jack Whitehurst and Si Kahn. The Center’s purpose was to create a gathering place for regional stamp collectors’ stamp collections and philatelic books; to sponsor workshops in stamp collecting at SMU; assist local stamp clubs; and serve as a vehicle for tax-deductible donations of money or philatelic materials for the furtherance of philately in the region.

The organization quickly grew to about one hundred members and began to plan for annual symposia, the first of which was held in February 1973. The Center’s Executive Committee also petitioned Fondren Library for a secured space in the Erin Bain Jones library room dedicated to philatelic materials gathered by the Center. Although the organization’s beginnings were promising, by 1975 local interest in the Center had waned and several key members of the executive committee had retired from the club. Therefore, the Center disbanded itself on May 24, 1976 and transferred its funds to SMU’s unrestricted endowment account.

Processing Information

The materials were found in one box in decent order; the folders were all labeled, and an attempt had clearly been made to maintain the filing systems. During processing the folder label designations were preserved, and the contents of each folder were kept in original order. The collection was re-foldered, and the folders that comprise the series were rearranged chronologically and topically.
