Minister and historian William Warren Sweet was born in Baldwin, Kansas on February 15, 1881 to Rev. William Henry Sweet (1843-1919) and Rose Althea Williams Sweet (1848-1919). On May 18, 1906 he married Louise M. Neill (1882-1967). They had three sons and two daughters.
Sweet earned degrees from Ohio Wesleyan University (A.B., 1902); Drew Theological Seminary (B.D., 1906); Crozer Theological Seminary (M.Th., 1907); University of Pennsylvania (A.M., 1907 and Ph.D., 1912). He also received two honorary degrees: D.Litt. (Ohio Wesleyan University, 1935) and L.H.D. (DePauw University, 1956.)
Reverend Sweet served two ministerial appointments near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: Willow Grove Methodist Episcopal Church, 1906-1908, and Langhorne Methodist Episcopal Church, 1908-1911. He then held history and church history teaching positions at Ohio Wesleyan University 1911-1913, DePauw University 1913-1927, and the University of Chicago Divinity School, 1927-46. Following his retirement in 1946, Sweet taught at Garrett Biblical Institute, 1946-1947; Perkins School of Theology and Southern Methodist University, 1948-1952; the University of Texas (visiting professor), 1951; Pomona College, 1952-1953; and Mills College, 1955-1956.
William Warren Sweet died in Dallas, Texas on January 3, 1959.

The William Warren Sweet papers document Dr. Sweet’s work as a Methodist minister and historian. The collection includes two sets of professional correspondence files, sermons and public addresses notes, documents from courses that Sweet taught and institutions that he served, copies of publication drafts and published writings, topical research notes, primary source documents and transcriptions, two wooden gavels, and a copy of a 1952 United Nations petition to which Sweet was a signatory. Although the overall date range of materials in the collection is 1794-2005, most items were created in the twentieth century and relate to the later decades of Sweet’s teaching career.
The collection is open for research use. Patrons must sign the Acknowledgement of Legal Responsibility and Privacy Rights form before using this collection.
Permission to publish materials must be obtained from the Director of the Bridwell Library.

Series 2: Ministry Papers, 1902-1957 |
|
The ministry papers of William Warren Sweet include sermons, prayers, worship bulletins, and denominational leadership papers. The series begins with manuscript and typescript notes from 201 sermons and devotional addresses. Some are full sermon scripts; others are annotated sermon outlines. Undated sermons are indicated by the date range of 1902-1957. Supplied titles appear in square brackets. The sermon notes have been placed in scripture reference order by the primary sermon text or by the first scripture citation noted in the sermon. Many sermons include multiple scripture references. Series 2 ends with supplemental materials: prayers, worship bulletins, and documents concerning a business item on the topic of “Keeping and Preserving of Church Records” proposed to the 1940 Methodist Church General Conference. |
|
The differences between Sweet’s sermons and other public addresses are not great. For the purposes of arrangement and description, address notes that begin with scripture citations have been categorized as sermons. Those clearly identified as speeches to community groups and those that do not begin with a scripture passage have been categorized as addresses and placed in series 3. |

Series 3: Teaching Papers, 1902-1957 |
|
The teaching papers of William Warren Sweet are arranged in three topical subseries: Speeches, Courses, and Academic Institutions. |
|
Subseries 1, Speeches, comprises 315 folders of class lectures and public addresses arranged in alphabetical order by title and a single folder of speaking engagement programs. The lectures and addresses are similar in format to the sermons in Series 2 but lack introductory scripture texts. Like the sermons, the speeches lack the kind of extensive citations required of academic writing for publication. Undated speeches are indicated by the date range of 1911-1957. Supplied titles appear in square brackets. |
|
Subseries 2, Courses, contains 16 folders of bibliographies, tests, notes, class lists, and student work from courses that Dr. Sweet taught. The folder titles are topical and begin with United States religious and political history. Folders pertaining to other nations and regions follow (Canada, Latin-America, Europe, and Asia). |
|
Subseries 3, Academic Institutions, includes 14 folders of correspondence and administrative papers organized alphabetically by school name. This subseries includes data from Sweet’s years as a student at Ohio Wesleyan University and Drew Theological Seminary. |
