Southern Methodist University was established in Dallas by an Educational Commission appointed in 1910 by the five Annual Conferences of The Methodist Episcopal Church, South in Texas. These Annual Conferences confirmed the work of the Commission, which resulted in the University being chartered by the state of Texas on April 17, 1911. Classes began in September 1915.
In 2010, Southern Methodist University is on the verge of commemorating its 100-year anniversary, to be celebrated in 2011. Boasting an enrollment of roughly 11,000 students, SMU confers undergraduate, graduate, and professional degrees through seven schools: humanities and sciences; business; performing, visual, and communication arts; engineering; education and human development; law; and theology.
This collection consists of 8x10 and 4x5 glass plates and plastic negatives. There are 130 8x10 glass plates, 145 8x10 plastic negatives, 19 4x5 glass plates, and 4 4x5 plastic negatives. Some glass plates have their corresponding prints. Some prints do not have corresponding negatives.
The glass plate negatives date from the 1920s and 1930s. The plastic negatives date from the 1930s to 1950s.
Almost half of the images deal with athletics, including football, basketball, baseball, tennis, track, and swimming. There are also images of early SMU buildings, including Dallas Hall, Fondren Library, McFarlin Auditorium, the Men’s and the Women’s dormitory (Women’s dormitory is now Clements Hall--the Men’s dormitories no longer exists), and Kirby Hall. There are several unidentified buildings that may be houses in the University Park neighborhood.
Additionally, there are landscape photographs showing trees and a creek, others of theater productions, SMU graduations, a cornerstone/groundbreaking ceremony, letters and checks from the Graduation Education Committee in New York, and portraits of students and staff.
Some photographs were shot by Laughead Photography. Earlier photographs may have been taken by Frank Rogers, a commercial photographer in the Dallas area.
In general, notes on the negatives were transcribed as written. Numbers after the date may refer to job numbers from photographer’s studio.
Collection is open for research use.

Deposit.
Due to their weight, the glass plates are kept in 6 quarter boxes. The tenth box houses glass plates that are stuck together. The plastic negatives are contained in one half box. The 4x5 negatives are kept in a small 5x7 box.
Several 8x10 gelatin silver group portrait prints date from the 1920s to 1950s and are stuck to pieces of glass, damaged by an unknown substance. Lastly, one of the boxes originally had “Frank Rogers Negatives” written on it. Rogers was a commercial photographer in the Dallas area. It is unclear, however, which photographs were taken by him.
