      <head>Biographical Note</head>
<p>George A. McAfee was born in Pekin, Illinois on August 11, 1889. He was one of two sons born to a family named Dietz. When his mother remarried, her husband adopted the boys. George McAfee left Illinois at age 12, riding the rails until he arrived in Texas. Still a young boy, he took a variety of jobs including work for Wells Fargo and chauffeur. </p>
<p>McAfee started his career as a photographer in the 1910s. He bought a camera, and started taking photographs of people he met, finding photography an interesting profession. In 1916, McAfee was listed as a photographer in the Dallas city directory. He worked as a photojournalist for the <emph render="italic">Dallas Morning News</emph> from circa 1922 until 1928. McAfee opened a commercial studio around 1930, and owned it until his retirement in 1971. He photographed Dallas streets and commercial buildings for almost forty years. Many of the street scenes were taken at night showing decorative neon signs. The collection includes images of department stores, offices, commercial buildings, churches, schools, classrooms, furniture, groups of people, outdoor Christmas lighting, interiors of homes, and commercial exhibits. Other subjects include railroad depots, automobiles, planes and portraits of photographer George McAfee. Dallas Power &#x0026; Light was a prominent client. McAfee also collected earlier Dallas views by other photographers. McAfee died October 13, 1974.</p>
