Shared governance had a short life at SMU. The concept was popular from initial research forays into its feasibility for the university in the 1960s until the death of the University Assembly in 1975. The University Assembly grew increasingly unpopular with the SMU faculty over time.

Records in the collection relate mostly to SMU’s University Assembly, but there are also numerous documents related to the philosophy of shared governance itself as well as the structure of SMU’s University Assembly. This collection contains reports, correspondence, and meeting minutes.

Materials were found in several boxes in rough order. Most were labeled. Records were sorted, re-foldered and paper clips were removed. Duplicate minutes were deaccessioned.
