Biographical Note

Layton W. Bailey served as business manager, treasurer, and Board of Trustees secretary for Southern Methodist University. He began at SMU in 1924, working nearly thirty-five years there until his retirement in 1958.

Bailey was born in Dallas and attended Emerson College and SMU, where he majored in finance and general business.

In addition to his role as a business administrator of SMU, Bailey also worked for the National Hemophilia Foundation as Board of Trustees chairman of the Dallas chapter, and as a board member for the national organization. His many years of service to SMU were recognized by the Trammell Crow family in 1985 when they requested that a room in the new graduate wing of the SMU business school be named after him.

Bailey died in 1987 at the age of 97.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

The Bailey collection is comprised of printed material from campus events that Mr. Bailey acquired during and after his tenure at SMU. The first series contains programs and pamphlets for building dedications, class reunions, convocations, and dinners. These have been arranged according to the type of event they detail. This series also includes some SMU-related news clippings, as well as two copies of the <emph render="italic">Dinkey</emph>, the spoof campus newspaper issued each year on April 1.

Series 2 is made up of full-size newspaper editions on SMU events. These have been arranged both according to topic and according to newspaper. Major events/headlines related to SMU are arranged by themselves.

Users should note that this collection does not contain any papers related to Mr. Bailey’s work as a SMU business administrator.
