Biographical NoteEffie Elizabeth Combs (1890-1973) belonged to the Churchill Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Arkansas Division in Little Rock, Arkansas before joining the Little Rock Chapter as a charter member in 1937. She served as Recording Secretary of the Churchill Chapter; as Historian, Registrar, and President of the Little Rock Chapter; and as State Director of the United Daughters of the Confederacy Magazine (now UDC Magazine). Return to the Table of Contents Scope and Contents of the CollectionThis collection consists of materials collected by Effie Elizabeth Combs, long-time member of the Arkansas Division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Documents from the Arkansas Division and two of its chapters – the General T. J. Churchill Chapter (est. 1911) and the Little Rock Chapter (est. 1937) – comprise the bulk of the collection. Documents include printed programs of the Arkansas Division annual conventions from the period 1931 to 1962; an event calendar; event programs; brochures; pamphlets; letters to or from the Arkansas Division president; General T. J. Churchill Chapter yearbooks from the period 1922 to 1949; Little Rock Chapter yearbooks from the period 1938 to 1972; a membership roster of the Little Rock Chapter; and printed programs from the Little Rock Chapter’s annual conventions. In addition to the material produced by the Arkansas Division of the UDC and its chapters, the collection contains a pamphlet titled Letters of David O. Dodd (he was hung as a Confederate spy during the Civil War); two copies of Marie Erwin Ward’s The Long, Long, Thoughts of Youth: The Story of David Owen Todd; a copy of the text of a 1923 Arkansas State Law involving the Arkansas Division of the UDC; a typescript titled "Southern Recipes"; a series of booklets of poems written by UDC member Josie Frazee Cappleman (d. 1936); a typescript by George M. Mooreland titled "An Arkansas Poet: The Confederates’ Friend" (about Cappleman); notes on Cappleman; a booklet titled The Right of Secession; a program from the re-enactment of the Secession Convention on its 100th anniversary; the Biennial Report of the Arkansas Confederate Home, 1926-1928; and the Arkansas History Commission Bulletin of Information, no. 5 (March 1913).
