The Young Women’s Christian Association was organized to nurture the spiritual, intellectual, social and physical development of young women by providing classes and housing assistance. The YWCA of Dallas, Texas became a member of the YWCA of the United States of America on February 3, 1909. Covering the metropolitan Dallas area, programs include camping, homemaking and job skill courses, a rape crisis center, and a battered women’s shelter. This collection contains institutional records, deeds and titles; scrapbooks with clippings and photographs; photographic albums; slides, negatives and audio visual media; awards, plaques, certificates and acknowledgements of the YWCA accomplishments. |

Although founded in London, England, in 1855, the YWCA crossed the Atlantic and was established in New York in 1858. The first US group was known as the Ladies’ Christian Association and organized by Mrs. Caroline Roberts. Their name was officially changed in 1859 to Young Women’s Christian Association. Originally the YWCA was designed to teach office skills to women who would otherwise have had to work in the factories. In 1894 the United States American Committee, England, Sweden and Norway joined together to create the World YWCA. Today the YWCA is the oldest and largest multicultural women's organization in the world.
The Early Years
In 1907 a provisional committee worked through the year to formally organize the Young Women’s Christian Association of Dallas on February 21, 1908. Mrs. John Everman served as the first president until 1913. Mrs. Grace Sheppard was the first general secretary.
In March 1909 a State Charter was secured and the YWCA of Dallas became affiliated with the National YWCA as a non-profit organization to meet the need for a safe, decent place to live for young women seeking employment in Dallas.
In July 1911 the first local YWCA residence was established at 1919 North Haskell Avenue, a gift by Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Mulkey. The enthusiasm of the first YWCA made it necessary to move from small rented quarters to larger ones as the work and programs grew.
In June 1912 YWCA left quarters at 333 Commerce and moved to 1219 Main Street, and then to 1515 Commerce Street.
In spring 1919 under the leadership of the General Secretary, Grace Whiting (1912-1925) was responsible for the largest building campaign in Dallas, raising $800,000 for YWCA facilities. As a result, the organization was able to expand its programs to meet the needs of the war years and establish a new younger girls' program called "Girl Reserves."
1920s
In 1921 the YWCA of Dallas bought the old Hockaday School property at 1206 North Haskell and built and fully equipped Proctor Hall by November.
In 1923 the Activities Building at 1709 Jackson St. was built and furnished. It was established to provide a "family" living environment for young farm girls and girls from foreign countries who had come to Dallas after World War I to earn a living. The activities building became the permanent home of the YWCA in August 1923; unfortunately, smaller pledges and construction cost increases created a mortgage burden of $275,000.
In 1924 the first Community Chest was initiated and the YWCA entered into joint financing. After an eight year partnership with the Chest, the YWCA did not receive sufficient money to take care of an expanding program. With its mortgage and the depression, by mutual arrangement the YWCA left the Community Chest.
In fall 1925 Camp Tres Rios, near Glen Rose, Texas, provided an outdoor camping experience in a Christian atmosphere for the girls from the city. It began as a gift of ten acres which was increased several years later to 77. In 1927 the first camp building, "The Lodge," was erected and by 1941 nine cottages were added. In the first year an artesian well was drilled supplying the total camp with a pool built in 1928. A well equipped camp developed through the years operating from June to August as a vacation camp for teenage girls and in the fall and spring for weekend campers and longer periods for young adults and family groups.
In November 1927 the Homemakers Industrial School deeded to the YWCA all accumulated holdings. This venture was started by a group of women interested in providing training for African American girls and women and a day nursery to care for the young children of working black women. The Council of Church Women cooperated with the YWCA and raised $7,000 which they placed in building and loan shares until 1936. In 1937-39 a joint effort of the black community and friends of the downtown YWCA increased the building fund to $12,000. The old building was replaced by the new Maria Morgan branch building costing $14,000, and dedicated in February 1940 entirely debt-free.
In 1929 the YWCA began offering special short-term courses to train women for jobs available during the Depression years.
1930s - 1950s
In 1936, with the return of Louise Gies as executive secretary, a building debt campaign was planned. With the over $95,000 raised, $50,000 was paid on the mortgage debt and all local debts were cleared. The organization was also able to refinance $100,000 of their debt.
In 1939, the Maria Morgan Branch, center of work for the black community, was started through a gift of the Homemakers Industrial School. The Morgan building was built in 1940.
In 1940 the YWCA cooperated again with the reorganized Community Chest (later the United Way) with a mortgage indebtedness of $73,000. In 1944 the War Chest granted $49,000 to clear the Association of its capital indebtedness.
In 1942 the YWCA facilities and services were pressed into action in cooperation with the USO and other service groups to help meet the challenging times of World War II.
From 1948 to 1957 the program continued to grow and prosper under the direction of able volunteers and staff.
In 1959 the Association became a Metropolitan Association with Metropolitan offices. A 50th Anniversary commemoration was planned to highlight the programming. Miss Guise retired and Lucille Douglass became the Executive Director. A vigorous program of expansion, upgrading program, staff and services in addition to renovations of buildings was carried out.
1960 to Current
The 1960s were known as the expansion years for the organization. The YWCA services were extended to outlying communities through the addition of YWCA branches and program centers, taking YWCA services and programs to where people lived. The Advisory Committee was reorganized to include more businessmen in the city and a ten year plan was developed to include a new downtown building, four branch buildings and 16 centers.
In 1960 the Garland branch opened.
In 1961 the Lelah B. Widner Oak Cliff branch opened.
In 1962 the legal name of the YWCA was changed to Young Women’s Christian Association of Dallas and Dallas County.
In 1963 the Central (downtown) branch opened.
In 1964 three new centers were established in Irving, South Dallas and Farmers Branch-Carrollton.
In 1966 Park-North center was opened and later became a branch in 1968.
In March 1967 the Richardson Park branch opened as well as the Women’s Resource Center and Girls Adventure Trails.
In 1972, a year of challenge and change for the YWCA, $2,000,000 was needed to build a solid foundation for the future. Timely YWCA services helped people to help themselves toward building a better life.
In 2004 YWCA USA launched a revitalized brand that reaffirms the mission and firmly positions the organization for today and the future. Today, there are YWCAs in 122 countries, with 25 million members, including more than 300 branches and centers serving 2.6 million members in the United States.
Along the way, many women have faced the difficult, personal decisions as well as the challenge of breaking down social, racial and economic barriers. The YWCA served as a safe haven and a unified voice throughout their history-through the most challenging of times.
This collection contains 5 main series: institutional records, deeds and titles dating from 1893 to 1994; 40 historical scrapbooks with clippings and photographs dating from 1938 – 2003; 49 photographic albums; approximately 1650 photographic prints in various sizes, 11,426 35mm slides, negatives and audio visual media; and 19 awards, plaques, certificates and acknowledgements of the YWCA accomplishments.
