Though the collection spans the period from 1965 through 2006, the bulk of the material comes from Miller’s postdoctoral career (1981-2006). The papers include research materials, essays, translations, translation journals, a handbook from a 1980 translation workshop, American Literary Translators Association (ALTA) newsletters and membership rosters, grant applications, rejection slips, and a draft of Miller’s master’s thesis.

Biographical Note

Elizabeth Gamble Miller received her bachelor's degree from Texas Christian University in 1946 and her master's degree in Spanish in 1965 from Southern Methodist University. A charter member of the American Literary Translators Association (ALTA), Miller received her doctorate in Comparative Literature and Aesthetics in 1981 from The University of Texas at Dallas. She served as a part- or full-time instructor at SMU for three separate periods: from 1947 to 1949, from 1957 to 1960, and from 1962 to 1972. In 1972, Miller became an assistant professor of Spanish, and advanced to associate professor in 1984. She retired in August of 2002.
For twenty-three years (1983-2006) she served as an editor for the <emph render="italic">ALTA Newsletter</emph>, which boasts a circulation of over one thousand. She translated many poems from Spanish into English, and worked as a consultant in her spare time.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

The Elizabeth Gamble Miller papers reflect Dr. Miller’s time as a member of the academic community. They clearly demonstrate that Dr. Miller's academic interest centered on translating Spanish literature.

The bulk of the collection focuses on her career after 1981, the year she received her doctorate. Dr. Miller translated Spanish-language poetry and stories into English. And her involvement in the American Literary Translators Association (ALTA) is expressed by the large amounts of information on ALTA workshops, conferences, and newsletters found in the collection.

Other portions of the collection include personal and professional correspondence, research material, grant applications, and course notes for her SMU teaching responsibilities.
