Historical Note

The Southwest Review is a literary journal published quarterly at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. It began as the Texas Review, published at the University of Texas from 1915 until 1924. U.T. Literature professor Stark Young worked as the Review’s first editor, and he was succeeded by Rogert Adger Law. In its early years the journal did not do very well, and U.T. was on the verge of closing it down when Dr. Jay B. Hubbell of the SMU English Department offered to take charge of the obscure publication. U.T. agreed, and with the turning over to SMU of the journal’s list of subscribers (16), the new university in Dallas found itself the owner of a literary journal.

With the move of the Texas Review north to Dallas came a name change. The journal was renamed the Southwest Review. Dr. Hubbell, along with Dr. George Bond, served as the joint editors of the journal until 1927 when John H. McGinnis of the SMU English Department took over the editorial duties. Several younger colleagues and students assisted.

The operation of a literary journal was ambitious for a university that was barely ten years old. During its first several years of operation in Dallas, the Review appeared headed in the same direction as that of its forebear the Texas Press at U.T. The journal enjoyed barely enough funding to operate; the Review’s income consisted of a $1,000 annual payment from SMU, some donations from subscribers and interested Dallas residents, and sales of subscriptions. The number of subscriptions did jump considerably from 16 to 937 by 1932, although the journal approached bankruptcy during the Depression.

The Review was briefly published in collaboration with Louisiana State University from 1932-1935. With the founding of the Southern Review at Louisiana State in 1935 the collaboration ended, and full control over the journal reverted to SMU.

Several staff members at the Review became regular contributors: John Chapman, Henry Nash Smith, Lon Tinkle, S.D. Myres, Jr., Allen Maxwell, and Margaret Hartley. John McGinnis’s tenure as editor ended in 1942, and he was succeeded by Donald Day.

In 1984, for the first time in many years, the editorship of the Review was held by a SMU faculty member. English professor Willard Spiegleman has served as editor since then, and received the PEN/Nora Magid award for editing in 2005.

Through the nearly nine decades of its publication the Southwest Review has emphasized regional literature, history, and art. The list of literary and artistic contributors includes J. Frank Dobie, Mary Austin, Paul Horgan, Jerry Bywaters, D.H. Lawrence, Maxim Gorky, Robert Penn Warren, Horton Foote, Amy Clampitt, and Arthur Miller. The Review can boast of being the oldest journal of general discussion in the southwestern United States—as well as of being the third oldest continuously published literary quarterly in the country—and it has been instrumental in the encouragement and interpretation of the literature and art of the region.

Noting the significance that the Southwest Review has played not only for SMU but for the southwest region more broadly, history professor and SMU graduate Mary Martha Hosford Thomas observed,

The efforts of the Review and its numerous writers all add up to a rediscovery of the Southwest as a region, a recognition that it had made a contribution to the fields of literature, history, art, philosophy, and science. With its emphasis on regionalism… the magazine as well as the university played a role in developing knowledge of and pride in a region that had a substantial history.

Scope and Contents of the Collection

The Southwest Review collection is arranged into seven series. Series 1 contains correspondence received by, and sent from, the Southwest Review. This series is divided into four subseries, depending on subject matter: general inquiries and feedback from the public, correspondence with contributing authors, inquiries regarding subscriptions, and correspondence on material that did not get published in the journal. The first two subseries are arranged in alphabetical order, the third in chronological order, and the fourth subseries in alphabetical and then chronological.

Series 2 is made up of administrative and subscription files. The series is arranged in alphabetical order, and includes information on several of the longtime staff members of the Review, such as Allen Maxwell and Margaret Hartley. Subscription information such as invoices and Christmas subscriptions are also in this series.

Series 3 contains financial records, including invoices, ledger books, and bank statements. This material is arranged in alphabetical order, as is Series 4: Promotion and Publicity. Included in Series 4 are promotional mail-outs and Christmas cards sent to subscribers, correspondence with other publishers and university presses, and publicity received by the Review.

Series 5, arranged chronologically, is made up of requests from individuals and other publications for permission to reprint material originally published in the Southwest Review.

Series 6 contains subject files, arranged in alphabetical order, from material originally included in the collection at the time it was originally transferred to the DeGolyer Library. Many of these files do not relate directly to the Review, although much of it is germane to SMU. Information on the SMU Press, the SMU Board of Publications, the Southwest Book Fair, and further files on staff members of the Review are arranged in this series.

Series 7 is made up of manuscripts for articles published in the Review. The manuscripts date from the 1940s through the early 1980s. The journal was published quarterly, and there is material is arranged accordingly: manuscripts for summer 1952, autumn 1952, winter 1953, and so on. In addition to manuscripts, some galley and author’s proofs are included. This series is also arranged chronologically.

Users of this collection should note that several of the staff members of the Southwest Review also worked at the Southern Methodist University Press. During the processing of this collection some material from SMU Press was found and placed in the SMU Press records collection (Mss 0064). The SMU Press collection is also open for research use, and users should consult that collection for related material.

Users should also note that both the DeGolyer Library and SMU Fondren Library have complete sets of issues of the Southwest Review. These are available to the researcher upon request. The DeGolyer Library also has issues of the Texas Review, published at the University of Texas from 1915 until its move to SMU in 1924.
