Alvah Milton Kerr was an author of popular adventure stories in the late 1890s and early 1900s. His pulp writings were published in newspapers and magazines, and some were eventually bought for screenplays. Alvah Milton Kerr and his family were extremely involved in the theosophy movement in the United States.
The Alvah Milton Kerr family papers consist of Alvah Milton Kerr, Hallie Kerr and Walter Sinclair’s stories, Alvah Milton Kerr and Hallie Kerr’s notes, and business and personal correspondence covering the years between 1900 and 1962.
This collection illustrates the career of a popular writer and his family, many of whom were also writers, during the early to mid 1900s. It also shows the progress and inner workings of the theosophy movement both in America and abroad, as Hallie Kerr, Enid Sinclair, and Lois Schedler all corresponded with prominent figures in the movement who traveled to spread their beliefs.

	 <head>Biographical Note</head>
<p>Alvah Milton Kerr was an author of adventure stories in the 1890s and early 1900s. His works were published in magazines throughout the early 1900s and were quite popular. A few of Alvah Milton Kerr’s most famous stories were, <emph render="doublequote">A Mormon Wife</emph>, <emph render="doublequote">Ban Ootah’s Way</emph>, and <emph render="doublequote">Disarming at Broad Gap.</emph> His novel <emph render="underline">An Honest Lawyer</emph> also brought him fame in the 1890s. Shortly before his death in 1924 he wrote the <emph render="underline">Truth is Greater than Fiction</emph> series, a group of stories based on fact that was published in various newspapers throughout the United States. Additionally, Kerr and his family were very involved in the theosophy movement in the United States. Their influence continued into the 1960s.</p>
<p>Alvah Milton Kerr was best known by Milton. He was married twice, and had a daughter named Enid Kerr with his first wife, Florence. Enid married Ernest Ohrenstein and shortened the name to <emph render="doublequote">Orren</emph> for herself. She and Ernest had a child named Ernest Milton Ohrenstein, who they called Milton after his grandfather Kerr. Enid divorced Ohrenstein and later married Walter Sinclair, with whom she had two children, Elaine and Lois Sinclair. In the meantime, Alvah Milton married Harriet Sinclair, nicknamed Hallie, who was Walter’s older sister. Alvah Milton Kerr died in 1924. Elaine Sinclair married Myron Firth and eventually adopted Donald and Lois Ann, named for her sister. Lois Sinclair married Clayton Schedler and had a son named Clayton, or Clay, who died before he reached adulthood. </p>
<p>Hallie Sinclair Kerr and Enid Orren Sinclair helped to found theosophy lodges throughout California, the Midwest, and the Northeast. The family maintained correspondence with missionaries of theosophy who went to India, France, and England to spread their faith. Many of the family’s letters and notes show how they applied their faith as theosophists to their everyday life. The application of faith is especially evident in Lois’s letters, as she uses theosophy to console herself after the death of her young son Clay.</p>

<head>Scope and Contents of the Collection</head>
<p>The papers of Alvah Milton Kerr consist of several of Alvah Milton Kerr, Hallie Kerr and Walter Sinclair’s stories, Alvah Milton Kerr and Hallie Kerr’s notes, and business and personal correspondence covering the years between 1900 and 1962. It includes notes Alvah Milton and his wife Harriet took over fictional, historical, and theosophical literature.</p>
<p>The short stories include edited drafts, publications, and a few business letters and notes that illustrate the changes movies brought to the business of entertainment literature. The notes are excerpts from books Alvah Milton and Hallie found inspirational or helpful and personal thoughts and musings.</p>
<p>Much of the personal correspondence is between Alvah Milton Kerr’s daughter Enid and Walter Sinclair, who wrote love letters to each other almost daily between September 1904 and August 1905, when they were married. Additionally, a large amount of the correspondence is between Lois Schedler and her parents Walter and Enid, to whom she wrote at least once a week for nearly forty years (1920-1960). These letters show the progress of the theosophy movement, as well as the roles of this family and their friends in the movement. As many of these years were marked by loss and struggle, the application of the theosophic faith is particularly evident.</p>

<p>This series consists primarily of letters between Hallie Kerr and publishers regarding the publication of Alvah Milton’s work. It contains several story outlines, or briefs, for Alvah Milton’s stories, and two listings of the magazines in which his stories were published. Finally, there is a collection of letterhead published by the Boyce Newspaper Company that is decorated with Alvah Milton Kerr’s picture and a list of stories he wrote. This section also contains a theosophy lesson plan and a program sent to the family by their associates, with whom they were leading several theosophy lodges. Arrangement is chronological by topic.</p>
