Creator Sketch

Joseph W. Southwick, a native of Galveston, Texas, was a Confederate soldier who joined the "Lone Star Rifles" in 1861. He remained with the troops as they merged with other regiments to form Company L of the Texas Brigade, better known as Hood’s Texas Brigade. Southwick was killed in 1863 at the Battle of Gettysburg. The donor of the collection, Charles Southwick, is the great-nephew of Joseph W. Southwick.


Scope and Content Note

The Joseph W. Southwick Papers are comprised of a circa 1862 letter and an undated photograph. The circa 1862 letter is from Joseph W. Southwick to his father Stephen Southwick. The letter is written from a camp near Fredericksburg, Virginia, and describes a large-scale snow battle following an 8-inch snow storm in late January. There is also an undated photograph of Joseph W. Southwick.
