The Zebulon M. P. French Papers include legal and financial documents concerning Fayette County, Texas, from 1860 to 1862. There is an 1860 legal judgment in the case of Jacob Castleman versus Charles D. and Leonora Lewis of Fayette County, Texas, decreeing that the plaintiff recover a Negro slave named Burrill. Also included is an 1862 deed of land from J. J. Gossler to his wife Celeste R. Gossler; this document includes certification by Z. M. P. French and is attached to the back of the deed of land. In addition to these legal documents is an 1862 Texas scrip issued in LaGrange, Texas, during the Civil War, signed by Wm. S. Kupell, Chief Justice, and Z. M. P. French, Clerk. All of the documents are signed by Z. M. P. French, Clerk of Fayette County, Texas.
