Creator SketchLittle is known about Hiram Taylor of New Jersey who was married to Mary Thomson Taylor and served as a member of the United States army during the 1836 Texas Revolution. Return to the Table of Contents Scope and Content NoteThe Hiram Taylor Letter is 12 pages long, dated June 12, 1836, and addressed to his wife, Mary Thomson Taylor, in Freehold, New Jersey, while he was on board the barque Charles P. Williams, in Matagorda Bay, Texas. In the letter he describes his voyage from New Orleans, his arrival at Galveston Bay where he saw the Mexican prisoners taken after the Battle of San Jacinto, and detailed descriptions of the climate and resources of Texas.
